US democratic party investigates Elon Musk following allegations from Ukraine that SpaceX permitted Russia to utilize its satellites

SpaceX faces allegations of allowing Russia to use their satellites for communication during their conflict with Ukraine. Both Elon Musk and SpaceX are under scrutiny for allegedly disregarding sanctions placed on Russia.

American legislators have begun investigating Elon Musk's SpaceX after Ukraine alleged that Russian soldiers are utilizing the firm's Starlink satellite service on the battlefield in their current conflict, according to a Thursday report by the Washington Post.

The newspaper reports that Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia, US Representatives for Maryland and California respectively, wrote a letter on Wednesday. In their letter, they encouraged SpaceX to reveal any grievances concerning possible unlawful operations of Starlink terminals.

Democratic legislators voiced apprehensions about claims from Ukraine that Russian troops may have installed Starlink terminals, possibly breaching US sanction regulations.

Legislators have issued a warning to Gwynne Shotwell, the president of SpaceX, concerning Russia's use of Starlink. They further emphasized the potential danger it poses to Ukraine's safety and its detrimental effect on the national security of the United States.

"Raskin and Garcia expressed worry that you might not have suitable safeguards and rules established."

They also declared their plans to collaborate with the Pentagon and other organizations, underlining the significance of averting commerce that could strengthen the Russian military.

Earlier, the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine (GUR) alleged that there was a growing usage of Starlink services by Russian soldiers in combat zones, based on the intercepted communications among Russian military staff.

The head of SpaceX, Elon Musk, refuted claims, asserting that "Russia has neither directly nor indirectly purchased any Starlinks." Similarly, the Kremlin also dismissed any orders of Starlink terminals by the Russian military, pointing out the absence of authorization in the nation.

Shortly after the start of Russia's military action in February 2022, Musk gave about 20,000 Starlink terminals to Ukraine. Ukrainian soldiers use these terminals to control drones at the battlefront.

Musk disclosed last year that he turned down a plea from Ukraine to initiate the Starlink service in Crimea. Despite the appeal from Kiev, SpaceX decided not to breach rules unless explicitly instructed by US authorities, Musk clarified then. Even though he showed solidarity with Ukraine, Musk emphasized his desire for a peaceful settlement of the dispute.

The Post reported that the US Defense Department bought as many as 500 fresh Starlink terminals for Ukraine in June 2023, as referenced in the letter from the House Democrats.
