US Army is trialing GenAI for evaluating military strategies through video games, a study discloses

The US Army has begun investigating the potential of using generative AI systems such as OpenAI's ChatGPT for important military tasks. They are currently utilizing military video game simulations to experiment with AI-driven strategies and combat planning.

The U.S. Army Research Laboratory is exploring the potential of OpenAI's generative AI technologies for strategizing combat operations, utilizing a virtual military video game setting.

According to an article from the New Scientist, US Army researchers are using OpenAI's GPT-4 Turbo and GPT-4 Vision models to gather information on virtual battlefield landscapes, distinguish between allies and adversaries, and provide military intelligence on attack and defense tactics. In addition to these, they are also implementing two other AI models that rely on more outdated technology.

During their trials, AI helpers were assigned the task of wiping out all opposing forces and securing a specific target location. After they were given the task, the AI helpers came up with different strategies, which were then fine-tuned by a user in the role of a leader. Even though OpenAI's GPT models outperformed the rest, they also caused a higher number of losses while achieving their mission goals.

The incorporation of generative AI into military tactics is only a minor aspect of the US Army's broader initiative to utilize artificial intelligence.

The US Department of Defense's critical AI project, Project Maven, has demonstrated its effectiveness in missions such as spotting rocket launchers in Yemen and surface ships in the Red Sea. It has also been helpful in pinpointing targets for attacks in Iraq and Syria, as reported by Bloomberg.

Nonetheless, the possible use of AI in war situations brings up significant moral issues. Giving machines the power to make decisions that could result in deaths is more reminiscent of the Terminator film franchise than the hopeful image usually linked with AI. Despite these concerns, the military continues to advance with AI technology.

The Department of Defense has asked for considerable financial backing from US legislators to develop its artificial intelligence and network abilities, according to DefenseScoop. Moreover, roles like Chief Digital and AI Officer have been created to facilitate the integration and utilization of these technologies across the department.
