US Democrats investigate Elon Musk following allegations from Ukraine that SpaceX permitted Russia to utilize its satellites

Ukraine has alleged that SpaceX allowed Russia to employ its satellites for communication in the battlefield with Ukraine. Elon Musk and SpaceX are under scrutiny for allegedly disregarding the sanctions placed on Russia.

American legislators have begun an investigation into Elon Musk's SpaceX due to allegations from Ukraine. They claim that Russian soldiers have set up and are utilizing the company's Starlink satellite service in their current conflict's frontlines, as stated by the Washington Post on Thursday.

The newspaper reports that Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia, US Representatives from Maryland and California respectively, penned a letter on Wednesday. They called on SpaceX to reveal any grievances concerning the possible unlawful utilization of Starlink terminals.

The Democratic legislators voiced their worries regarding claims from Ukraine that Russian troops may have set up Starlink terminals, which could possibly breach US sanction regulations.

Legislators have issued a warning to SpaceX's leader, Gwynne Shotwell, about Russia's utilization of Starlink. They further highlighted the potential risks, emphasizing that if Russia gains access to Starlink, it could pose a significant danger to Ukraine's security, and compromise the US's national security.

"Raskin and Garcia expressed their worry that you might lack the necessary safety measures and guidelines,"

They also declared plans to collaborate with the Pentagon and other organizations, stressing the significance of hindering commerce that could strengthen the Russian military.

Ukraine's primary intelligence agency, the GUR, has previously alleged that Russian soldiers are progressively using Starlink services in combat, based on intercepted communications among Russian military staff.

Elon Musk, the chief executive officer of SpaceX, refuted the claims, asserting that "not a single Starlink has been sold to Russia, either directly or indirectly." The Russian government also dismissed any orders for Starlink terminals from the Russian military, highlighting that there's no certification for them in Russia.

Musk gifted around 20,000 Starlink terminals to Ukraine as soon as the Russian military maneuver started in February 2022. Ukrainian soldiers use these terminals to manage drones on the battlefront.

Musk disclosed in the previous year that he had turned down a plea from Ukraine to kick off the Starlink service in Crimea. Despite the appeal from Kiev, SpaceX decided not to disregard regulations unless they received explicit directives from the US authorities, as Musk clarified back then. Even though he showed sympathy for Ukraine, Musk emphasized his inclination towards a non-violent settlement of the dispute.

The Post reports that the US Defense Department acquired around 500 fresh Starlink terminals for Ukraine in June 2023, as referenced in the letter from House Democrats.
