US military is testing GenAI to evaluate combat strategies through video games, according to a study.

The US military is investigating the utilization of generative AI systems, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, for key military tasks. The army is currently employing virtual military video games to examine tactics and war planning using AI.

The US Army Research Laboratory is exploring the potential of OpenAI's generative AI technology for strategizing in warfare, utilizing a mock military video game setting.

According to a study published by the New Scientist, the US Army's research teams are using OpenAI's GPT-4 Turbo and GPT-4 Vision models to gather information about hypothetical war zones. These AI models help to distinguish between allied and adversary forces and deliver invaluable military knowledge concerning attack and defense tactics. In addition, they are also making use of two other AI models developed from preceding technology.

During their trials, AI aides were tasked with wiping out all opposition and protecting a designated target. After getting the assignment, the AI aides produced different strategies, which were then fine-tuned by a user in the role of a leader. While OpenAI's GPT models outperformed other models, they also led to higher losses in achieving the mission goals.

The incorporation of creative AI into military tactics is merely a minor aspect of the broader US Army's endeavor to utilize artificial intelligence.

The US Department of Defense's major AI project, Project Maven, has demonstrated effectiveness in tasks such as detecting rocket launchers in Yemen and ships in the Red Sea. It has also assisted in pinpointing targets for attacks in Iraq and Syria, as per a Bloomberg report.

The possible use of AI in combat situations brings up significant moral issues. Allowing machines to make choices that could result in deaths is reminiscent of the Terminator film franchise, rather than the positive outlook often linked with AI. Despite this, the military continues to pursue AI advancements.

The Pentagon has sought substantial monetary support from US legislators to improve its artificial intelligence and networking potential, according to DefenseScoop. Furthermore, roles like Chief Digital and AI Officer have been created to facilitate the integration and operation of this technology across the department.
