US democratic party investigates Elon Musk following allegations from Ukraine that SpaceX permitted Russia to utilize its satellites

SpaceX is under scrutiny for allegedly allowing Russia to use their satellites for communication in the battlegrounds of the dispute with Ukraine. Elon Musk and SpaceX are blamed for not complying with the restrictions placed on Russia.

American legislators have started an investigation into Elon Musk's company, SpaceX, after Ukraine alleged that Russian soldiers have put to use the firm's Starlink satellite system in the current battlefront, according to a Thursday report by the Washington Post.

The newspaper reports that Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia, who are US Representatives from Maryland and California respectively, wrote a letter on Wednesday. They were encouraging SpaceX to reveal any grievances related to the possible unlawful utilization of Starlink terminals.

Democratic legislators voiced their worries about claims from Ukraine that Russian troops might have set up Starlink terminals, possibly infringing upon US sanction rules.

Legislators have issued a warning to Gwynne Shotwell, the president of SpaceX, concerning Russia's use of Starlink. They emphasized that if Russia gains access to Starlink, it could significantly jeopardize the security of Ukraine and also pose a risk to the national security of the United States.

"Raskin and Garcia expressed their worries that you might lack the necessary safety measures and guidelines,"

They also declared plans to collaborate with the Pentagon and other organizations, underlining the significance of halting commerce that could potentially strengthen the Russian military.

Earlier, Ukraine's primary intelligence agency, the GUR, alleged that Russian forces were increasingly using Starlink services in combat situations. This claim was based on intercepted communications between Russian military staff.

Elon Musk, the head of SpaceX, refuted the claims, asserting that "not a single Starlink has been directly or indirectly sold to Russia." Similarly, the Kremlin dismissed any orders from the Russian military for Starlink terminals, attributing it to an absence of certification in the nation.

Shortly after Russia initiated its military actions in February 2022, Musk contributed around 20,000 Starlink terminals to Ukraine. Ukrainian forces utilize these terminals to control drones along the battle lines.

Musk disclosed last year that he turned down a plea from Ukraine to initiate Starlink service in Crimea. Regardless of Ukraine's appeal, SpaceX decided not to contravene rules unless explicitly directed by the US authorities, Musk clarified back then. Even though he voiced support for Ukraine, Musk emphasized his inclination towards a peaceful settlement of the dispute.

The Post reported that the US Defense Department bought around 500 fresh Starlink terminals for Ukraine in June 2023, as referenced in the letter from House Democrats.
