In a brief seven-minute meeting, IBM declared layoffs from two departments. IBM's head of communications, Jonathan Adashek, revealed a significant reduction in staff in the marketing and communication sectors, several months after its CEO, Arvind Krishna, proclaimed a focus on "upskilling" in a business landscape driven by artificial intelligence.

IBM has become a member of the technology sector's redundancy group once more this year, as it declared job cuts in its marketing and communications departments, without specifying the precise figure.

The head of communications at IBM, Jonathan Adashek, declared the reduction during a meeting that lasted around seven minutes with the relevant departments, according to sources mentioned in a CNBC report.

The news arrives just a few months following IBM's CEO, Arvind Krishna, stating in December that the company plans to concentrate on enhancing the skills of its workforce in a business atmosphere dominated by artificial intelligence.

IBM has been perceived as lagging for a while now, particularly since its rivals Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have amplified their endeavors to contend in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

In August, IBM declared the substitution of almost 8,000 positions with AI. They later introduced a 'development studio' called Watson X, which is designed to "train, adjust, and implement" machine-learning models.

During the profit report meeting in January 2023, IBM declared a reduction of 3,900 jobs. Subsequently, the company's CEO announced a halt in hiring, suggesting that in the next five years, about 30% of the workforce could be substituted by AI and automation.

The CFO of the company, James Kavanaugh, has stated that the firm will keep on recruiting for specific roles and anticipates that the total number of employees will remain roughly the same as the year comes to a close.

According to a study, IBM employed approximately 288,000 individuals by the close of 2023.

The narrative of technology downsizing persists.

Approximately 204 technology firms have eliminated close to 50,000 positions so far this year, as per the data from the website Layoffs.fyi. Large tech corporations including Alphabet, Amazon, and Unity have all declared job reductions, with most of these happening in January.

The sector continues to struggle with changes following the pandemic, a period that saw a surge in technology recruitment.

The possible excessive recruitment led to a tough 2023, as firms such as Amazon and Meta laid off tens of thousands of their staff.
