Elon Musk’s Bold Move: Open-Sourcing xAI’s Grok AI, Challenging OpenAI to Follow Suit

3 min read

Elon Musk is set to make a substantial part of GrokAI's source code publicly accessible this week, as declared by the billionaire tech tycoon. This move will position Grok among numerous AI studios that have made their source code open-source for public viewing and potential duplication. He has also challenged OpenAI to take the same action with ChatGPT.

Even those who criticize Elon Musk were caught off guard when he revealed that his AI company, xAI, plans to make Grok AI, its chatbot that rivals ChatGPT, open-source by the end of this week. Essentially, Musk will disclose the source code, or a substantial part of it, for public access and potential use in individual chatbots.

This action follows only a few weeks after Musk lodged a legal complaint against OpenAI, accusing the Microsoft-supported startup of deviating from its initial open-source values and now solely concentrating on financial gain.

xAI first launched Grok last year, providing services like access to live data. This service can be availed by premium members of X who pay a monthly fee of $16.

This week, Grok is set to go open-source by @xAI.

Musk was among the initial supporters of OpenAI. Nearly ten years ago, he poured money into Sam Altman’s venture, with the aspiration that OpenAI would challenge the dominance established by Google.

Musk asserts that OpenAI has deviated from its original promise to openly distribute its technology to the public, transitioning to a closed-source model and concentrating on increasing Microsoft's earnings.

The legal action has ignited discussions among tech experts and financiers regarding the importance of open-source AI. Vinod Khosla, who was among the first to back OpenAI, disapproved of Musk's lawsuit, describing it as a significant diversion from the aim of realizing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and its advantages.

Marc Andreessen, who co-founded Andreessen Horowitz, claimed that Khosla was opposing open-source AI research.

Andreessen contended that every major technological progression is met with overblown worries, and open-source AI is crucial for advancement. His company, a16z, has backed Mistral, a chatbot that utilizes open-source technology.

The news that xAI is planning to make Grok open-source soon is part of a rising trend of businesses, such as Meta and French startup Mistral, making their chatbot codes publicly accessible. This move makes Grok a part of several projects by Elon Musk that are now open-source.

Elon Musk has consistently championed the cause of open-source projects. Numerous patents at Tesla have been transitioned to open-source. In a similar vein, X has also made efforts to make some of its algorithms open-source in the previous year.
