This week, Elon Musk plans to make a large part of GrokAI's source code publicly available, challenging OpenAI to follow suit with ChatGPT. With this move, Musk reveals that Grok will become one of many AI companies that have shared their source code for public viewing and potential duplication.

Elon Musk has unexpectedly announced that his AI company, xAI, will make Grok AI, its chatbot that rivals ChatGPT, open-source later this week. This essentially implies that he will publish the source code, or a substantial part of it, for everyone to access and potentially incorporate into their own chatbots.

This step was taken only a few weeks after Musk lodged a legal complaint against OpenAI, accusing the Microsoft-supported start-up of deviating from its initial open-source values and is now solely concentrating on making money.

Grok was first launched by xAI in the previous year, providing functionalities like access to immediate data. This service can be accessed by premium members of X who are charged a monthly fee of $16.

In this week, @xAI plans to turn Grok into an open source.

Musk was among the initial supporters of OpenAI. He put his money into Sam Altman's initiative nearly ten years ago, with the aspiration that OpenAI would persist in challenging Google's dominant market position.

Musk asserts that OpenAI has drifted from its original promise to openly distribute its technology to the public, instead becoming proprietary and concentrating on increasing earnings for Microsoft.

The legal battle has ignited discussions among tech experts and financiers regarding the worth of open-source AI. Vinod Khosla, an initial backer of OpenAI, censured Musk's lawsuit, calling it a "huge diversion" from the objective of realizing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and its advantages.

Marc Andreessen, the co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz, retaliated by alleging that Khosla was opposing open-source AI research.

Andreessen contended that every major leap forward in technology is accompanied by overstated worries, and he believes that open-source AI is crucial for further development. His company, a16z, has backed Mistral, a chatbot that is open-source.

The news that xAI will shortly make Grok open-source puts it alongside a burgeoning group of firms, such as Meta and French newcomer Mistral, that have publicly shared their chatbot programming. Grok will also be part of numerous initiatives by Elon Musk that have been converted to open-source.

Elon Musk has continually advocated for open-source projects. Numerous patents at Tesla have been turned open-source. Moreover, X also began to make some of its algorithms open-source in the previous year.
