Elon Musk plans to make xAI's Grok AI's significant code publicly available, daring OpenAI to do the same with ChatGPT
Billionaire tech tycoon, Elon Musk, announced plans to make a substantial part of GrokAI's code open-source this week. Following this move, Grok will join numerous AI companies that have made their code public for scrutiny and potential duplication.
Elon Musk has unexpectedly announced that his AI company, xAI, plans to make Grok AI, its chatbot that rivals ChatGPT, open-source by the end of this week. This essentially implies that he will unveil the source code, or at least a large part of it, for public viewing and potentially for incorporation into their own chatbots.
This action follows merely weeks after Musk lodged a legal complaint against OpenAI, accusing the Microsoft-supported startup of deviating from its initial open-source values and is currently concentrating solely on revenue generation.
Last year, xAI first launched Grok, which provides features like real-time data access. This service can be availed by X's premium subscribers who shell out a monthly fee of $16.

Musk was among the initial supporters of OpenAI. Nearly ten years ago, he funded Sam Altman's initiative with the expectation that OpenAI would persist in challenging Google's dominance.
Musk asserts that OpenAI has deviated from its initial promise to openly distribute its technology to the public. Instead, it has become proprietary and is now primarily concerned with increasing Microsoft's profits.
The legal case has ignited a discussion amongst tech enthusiasts and financiers about the worth of open-source artificial intelligence. Vinod Khosla, an initial backer of OpenAI, has condemned Musk's lawsuit, calling it a "huge diversion" from the aim of attaining Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and its advantages.
Marc Andreessen, the co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz, countered by suggesting that Khosla was opposing open-source AI research.
Andreessen contended that each major leap in technology is confronted with overblown worries, and he believes that open-source AI is crucial for advancement. His company, a16z, has backed Mistral, an open-source chatbot.
The news that xAI is planning to make Grok open-source soon places it among a rising number of firms like Meta and French venture Mistral, who have shared their chatbot codes with everyone. Grok is also becoming part of a series of projects spearheaded by Elon Musk that have been converted to open-source.
Elon Musk has consistently advocated for open-source projects. Numerous patents at Tesla have been converted to open-source. Moreover, X also made efforts to make some of its algorithms open-source in the previous year.
