Following Xiaomi's debut into electric vehicles, Huawei is now keen to join the fray and has begun producing batteries for its partner firm. Shortly after Xiaomi revealed its inaugural electric vehicle, Huawei has kicked off large-scale distribution of its high-end electric vehicle, produced in collaboration with China's Chery Automobile. The luxury model, known as the Luxeed S7, starts at around $34,600.

A senior executive from Huawei has confirmed that the Luxeed S7 electric sedan, a joint venture between Huawei Technologies and Chery Automobile, is now being delivered to customers in large numbers. This comes after the project faced delays due to a lack of semiconductors and production challenges.

The head of Huawei's smart car solution division, Richard Yu Chengdong, disclosed the advancements in a Weibo message on Saturday. He pointed out that a substantial batch of Luxeed S7 cars has been produced and is currently on its way to be delivered to clients.

Previous updates suggested that Huawei expected to fix the delivery issues for the high-end electric vehicle by April. The postponements were partially due to production difficulties linked to a computing unit supplied by Huawei, leading to grievances from Chery.

The Chery's Luxeed EV brand introduced its first model, the S7 sedan, which has received around 20,000 orders by November 28. The starting price for this model is 249,800 yuan, which is roughly US$34,600.

Despite facing several obstacles, Huawei saw its revenue grow at the fastest rate in four years in 2023, mainly due to a revival in its consumer section and profits from budding businesses like smart car parts. These advancements are indicative of Huawei's continuous efforts to maneuver around US technology sanctions.

Moreover, Huawei had earlier declared intentions to segregate its smart car division into an independent entity. Yu suggested that the division is projected to start making profits from April, after experiencing significant financial losses in the previous year.

Despite facing hurdles, Huawei and Chery have shown their grit and resolve by successfully launching the Luxeed S7 electric sedan in a difficult market scenario. Now that they've started large-scale delivery, customers can look forward to getting their vehicles. This indicates a major breakthrough for electric cars in the Chinese market.
