Following Xiaomi's venture into the electric vehicle market, Huawei is also keen to participate, commencing the production of batteries for its associated manufacturer. Not long after Xiaomi launched its inaugural electric vehicle, Huawei has begun mass distribution of its high-end electric vehicle, produced in collaboration with Chery Automobile of China. The Luxeed S7, as it's known, is priced at roughly $34,600.
A senior executive from Huawei has confirmed that the Luxeed S7 electric sedan, a joint venture between Huawei Technologies and Chery Automobile, has begun to reach buyers in large numbers. This comes after the project faced delays due to a lack of semiconductors and production problems.
Richard Yu Chengdong, head of Huawei’s smart car solution division, disclosed the update in a post on Weibo on Saturday. He noted that a large batch of Luxeed S7 cars has been produced and is currently being shipped to their respective buyers.
Previous accounts suggested that Huawei was expected to sort out the delivery issues for the high-end electric car by April. The setbacks were somewhat due to manufacturing difficulties tied to a computing unit supplied by Huawei, leading to grievances from Chery.
The S7 sedan is the inaugural model for Chery's Luxeed EV brand and has received around 20,000 orders as of November 28. The starting price for this model is 249,800 yuan, which equates to roughly US$34,600.
Even with the hurdles faced, Huawei saw its quickest revenue rise in four years in 2023, mainly due to a revival in its consumer division and earnings from burgeoning sectors like intelligent car parts. These advancements are indicative of Huawei's continuous attempts to maneuver through US technology sanctions.
Additionally, Huawei had earlier stated its intention to make its smart car division a standalone business. Yu suggested that the division is projected to start turning a profit from April, after suffering significant losses in the previous year.
The triumphant launch of the Luxeed S7 electric sedan, despite early hurdles, highlights both Huawei and Chery's tenacity and resolve in a demanding market setting. As the large-scale distribution begins, customers can look forward to getting their orders, signaling an important landmark in the progression of electric vehicles in the Chinese market.
