Xiaomi SU7 EV Prospective Buyers Encounter Seven-Month Delays

Xiaomi's SU7 electric car sedan became available last Thursday, with the lowest price being $29,870. In just the first day, pre-orders skyrocketed to 88,898, indicating a high level of customer interest.

It appears that Xiaomi is following in the footsteps of Mahindra by making their customers await their newest product. Xiaomi's new SU7 electric sedan is in high demand, leading to potential purchasers experiencing delays of up to seven months, according to a Reuters report.

Xiaomi began taking orders for their SU7 electric car sedan last Thursday, with the starting price set at $29,870. In the initial 24 hours, they received a whopping 88,898 pre-orders, indicating a substantial consumer interest.

Reuters reported that Xiaomi's car application disclosed the projected delivery times for the SU7 models. The usual SU7 model and the SU7 Pro model are both expected to be delivered within a range of 18-21 weeks. However, the most expensive version, which costs 299,900 yuan, might require a longer wait of 27-30 weeks for delivery.

In an effort to boost sales, Xiaomi launched two unique "Founder's Edition" variants of their car, which come with bonus items such as refrigerators. The first set of 5,000 Founder's Edition vehicles were snapped up instantly when orders opened last Thursday.

Due to the significant interest, Lei Jun, the co-founder and CEO of Xiaomi, declared on Sunday through Weibo that they would be launching a second wave of sales for the Founder's Edition, though he didn't specify the number of units available. Lei further stated that Xiaomi had detected and prevented irregular orders, including those from resellers, during the purchasing process for the Founder's Edition.

Xiaomi's forward-thinking strategy in fulfilling demand is noticeable in its creation of a Beijing-based factory with the capacity to produce 200,000 cars per year, even before it obtained the necessary permissions to start manufacturing in China. In November, the state-run car manufacturer BAIC Group disclosed its intentions to produce vehicles for Xiaomi in the same facility.
