The US and UK join forces to unify public safety testing in AI systems

The US administration under the leadership of Joe Biden and the British government headed by Rishi Sunak are collaborating to unify AI testing and guarantee the safety of AI systems for the public. Both nations will also set up government-run institutes for AI safety.

The US and the UK have unveiled a joint venture aimed at tackling safety issues related to artificial intelligence (AI), as informed by Reuters. An agreement was signed by Gina Raimondo, the US Commerce Secretary, and Michelle Donelan, the UK Technology Secretary, in Washington. This agreement outlines their plans to jointly develop a sophisticated AI model.

This collaboration comes after promises were made at an AI Safety Summit in Bletchley Park in November.

Raimondo underscored the significance of AI, labeling it as the pivotal technology of our era. She expressed that the collaboration would hasten endeavors to tackle national security threats and wider societal issues related to AI.

Both nations are setting up state-sponsored AI safety organizations. The UK unveiled its institution in October to scrutinize and assess new forms of AI, while the US initiated its own safety organization in November to appraise hazards from sophisticated AI models. The American institute is currently partnering with 200 firms and entities.

In the official collaboration, the UK and the US intend to carry out combined testing activities on AI models that are open to the public. The two nations are also contemplating staff swaps between institutes and those that have comparable collaborations with other nations to enhance AI security.

AI that can generate text, images, and videos in response to unrestricted prompts has stirred both enthusiasm and worry over potential job loss, meddling in elections, and possible disastrous impacts.

During a collaborative interview with Reuters, both Raimondo and Donelan emphasized the immediate need to tackle the dangers associated with AI. Donelan brought attention to the necessity for collective measures, especially as more advanced AI models are on the verge of being launched. Raimondo revealed intentions to bring up AI-related matters at the forthcoming US-EU Trade and Technology Council gathering in Belgium.

The Biden government is set to reveal new members of its AI team shortly, utilizing resources from various US government sectors. Both nations intend to exchange data about AI abilities and threats, and join forces on technical studies.

In October, an executive order was signed by President Biden with the intention of diminishing the potential hazards of AI, followed by a suggestion in January from the Commerce Department that American cloud businesses should keep an eye on foreign access to American data centers for AI training. The UK revealed in February that they will be allocating more than £100 million to set up new research centers and educate regulators about AI technology.

Raimondo voiced specific worries regarding the possible abuse of AI in bioterrorism or simulating nuclear warfare, underscoring the necessity for absolutely no acceptance of such abilities.
