The US and UK form a partnership to unify public safety assessments in AI systems
The US government under the leadership of President Joe Biden and the UK government led by Rishi Sunak will collaborate to unify testing procedures for AI, ensuring the safety of AI systems for the general public. Both nations will also create government-led institutes for AI safety.
The U.S. and the U.K. have publicized a new alliance where they will jointly tackle issues regarding the security of AI technologies, according to Reuters. Gina Raimondo, the US Commerce Secretary, and Michelle Donelan, the British Technology Secretary, have sealed a pact in Washington to cooperate in creating a sophisticated AI model.
This collaboration comes after promises made during an AI Safety Summit in Bletchley Park in November.
Raimondo stressed the significance of AI, dubbing it as the defining technological advancement of our era. She expressed that the collaboration would boost initiatives to tackle both national security hazards and wider societal issues linked to AI.
Both nations are setting up state-run institutions for AI safety. The UK declared the formation of its institute in October to review and scrutinize novel AI technologies, while the US initiated its own safety institute in November to assess hazards from sophisticated AI models. Currently, the US institute is partnering with 200 organizations and entities.
In an official collaboration, the UK and the US intend to carry out combined trial runs on AI models available to the public. Additionally, they're contemplating staff swaps between their institutes and those that have comparable alliances with different nations to boost AI security.
Generative AI, capable of producing text, images, and videos in reaction to unspecified prompts, has elicited both enthusiasm and worries about job displacement, election meddling, and possible disastrous consequences.
During a shared interview with Reuters, both Raimondo and Donelan emphasized the pressing need to tackle the risks associated with AI. Donelan underscored the importance of collective action, particularly as more advanced AI models are on the verge of being launched. Raimondo revealed intentions to bring up AI-related matters at a forthcoming meeting of the US-EU Trade and Technology Council in Belgium.
The Biden administration is planning to reveal new members of its AI team shortly, gathering resources from all over the US government. The countries involved aim to exchange data on AI abilities and dangers and co-operate on technological research.
In October, an executive order was signed by President Biden with the goal of minimizing dangers associated with AI. The following January, the Commerce Department suggested that American cloud businesses should oversee foreign access to American data centers meant for AI training. In February, the UK declared intentions to allocate over £100 million for setting up new research centers and educating regulators about AI technology.
Raimondo conveyed a specific worry regarding the possible abuse of AI in bioterrorism or simulating nuclear warfare, stressing the necessity for absolute non-acceptance of such abilities.
