US and UK unite to unify AI public safety testing standards

The Joe Biden-led US administration and the UK government under Rishi Sunak will collaboratively work towards standardizing AI testing to guarantee the safety of AI models for the public. Both nations will also set up government-run institutes for AI safety.

The US and UK have declared a fresh collaboration aimed at tackling issues related to artificial intelligence (AI) safety, as informed by Reuters. An agreement to cooperate on the creation of a sophisticated AI model was signed in Washington by Gina Raimondo, the US Commerce Secretary, and Michelle Donelan, the UK's Technology Secretary.

This collaboration is a result of promises made during an AI Safety Summit held at Bletchley Park in November.

Raimondo stressed the significance of AI, labeling it as the pivotal technology of our era. She said that the collaboration would hasten the initiatives to tackle threats to national security and wider societal issues related to AI.

Both nations are setting up state-run institutions for AI safety. The UK declared the formation of its institute in October to investigate and validate new AI technologies, whereas the US introduced its own safety institute in November to assess hazards from sophisticated AI models. Presently, the US institute is working in partnership with 200 organizations and entities.

In an official collaboration, the UK and the US intend to carry out shared testing activities on AI models that are open to the public. Both nations are also contemplating staff swaps between institutes that have comparable alliances with other countries, with the aim of advancing AI security.

There's a lot of buzz around Generative AI due to its ability to generate text, images, and videos based on vague instructions. However, it's also causing some worry due to its potential to replace jobs, interfere with elections, and cause disastrous consequences.

In a collaborative discussion with Reuters, both Raimondo and Donelan emphasized the importance of dealing with the dangers associated with AI. Donelan underscored the necessity for collective efforts as more advanced AI models are on the verge of being launched. Raimondo revealed intentions to converse about AI concerns during a gathering of the US-EU Trade and Technology Council in Belgium.

The Biden administration is planning to reveal new members of its AI team shortly, utilizing resources from various sectors of the US government. The two nations aim to exchange knowledge about AI potential and dangers, and jointly conduct technical studies.

In October, President Biden enacted an executive directive with the intention of minimizing the dangers associated with AI. Then, in January, the Commerce Department suggested that American cloud companies should supervise international access to American data centers for AI training purposes. In February, the UK declared its intention to pour more than £100 million into the creation of new research centers and the education of regulators about AI technology.

Raimondo articulated her specific worries regarding the possible abuse of AI in bioterrorism or simulating nuclear warfare, stressing the importance of absolutely no tolerance for such abilities.
