The chief of US Intelligence alleges that China manipulated TikTok to sway US voters

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, also known as ODNI, asserts that China and its citizens have utilized TikTok not only to meddle in the presidential elections, but also to alter the public's perspective on China's aggressive actions.

The US intelligence sector has sounded an alarm claiming that the Chinese government used the widely-used video-sharing app TikTok to sway recent US elections, according to its yearly threat evaluation disclosed on Monday.

The Director of National Intelligence's Office (ODNI), tasked with supervising America's 18 intelligence agencies and publishing yearly evaluations spotlighting significant global threats to national interests, asserted that TikTok, supported by ByteDance, has been manipulating eligible voters to discourage them from participating in a group vote.

The importance of this alert is highlighted as it arises during a year of elections, while the House of Representatives prepares to cast votes on a bill designed to force ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, to sell its shares in the application. If they do not comply, TikTok could potentially be removed from app stores in the U.S.

The push for this law by Congress is a result of worries about national safety, given the possible access of American user data by the Chinese government through TikTok and their potential to run persuasive operations through the platform.

The report from this year suggests that purportedly, TikTok profiles managed by a Chinese propaganda unit attempted to influence candidates from all political spectrums during the 2022 US midterm elections. The report further warned that China could potentially meddle in the 2024 US elections, aiming to suppress China's critics and intensify societal splits within the US.

It isn't the inaugural instance of a person in America blaming China or Russia for meddling in their electoral process. It is believed that China has advanced abilities to carry out large-scale clandestine influence campaigns and spread false information.

Apart from influencing elections, China is also making efforts to mold the conversation in the United States around its sovereignty and areas it asserts control over, such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tibet, and Xinjiang.

The report further emphasizes China's surveillance of Chinese students studying overseas for differing opinions, as well as its impact on research carried out by American scholars and think tank professionals.

The report cautions about a progressively unstable international system, stressed by nations like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea. This instability is also fueled by local disputes, innovative technologies, and the financial consequences of climate change.

The text highlights the persistent rivalry between autocratic and democratic systems, which has impeded cooperative methods to tackle global problems like climate change. Additionally, the rise of new technologies like artificial intelligence and biotechnology is predicted to intensify this rivalry.

A representative from TikTok responded to the accusations by saying that the platform consistently combats dishonest actions, such as hidden influence networks. They also mentioned that the platform has put in place precautions to protect its global community during election periods.
