US democratic representatives investigate Elon Musk following allegations from Ukraine that SpaceX allowed Russia to utilize its satellites

SpaceX faces allegations of permitting Russia to use its satellites for frontline communication during the Ukraine conflict. Claims have been made that Elon Musk and SpaceX have violated the sanctions enacted against Russia.

American legislators have started an investigation into Elon Musk's SpaceX, following accusations from Ukraine that Russian soldiers are utilizing the firm's Starlink satellite service in their current conflict. This was reported by the Washington Post on Thursday.

The news reports that US lawmakers Jamie Raskin from Maryland and Robert Garcia from California have written to SpaceX on Wednesday, requesting the company to reveal any grievances about possible illicit use of Starlink terminals.

Democratic legislators have voiced their worries about claims from Ukraine suggesting that Russian troops might have used Starlink terminals, which could be a breach of US sanction rules.

Legislators have issued a warning to Gwynne Shotwell, the president of SpaceX, about Russia's use of Starlink. They further expressed their concerns regarding how Russia's access to Starlink could potentially jeopardize the safety of Ukraine and also pose a risk to the national security of the United States.

"Raskin and Garcia expressed their worry that you might lack the necessary protective measures and guidelines,"

They also stated their plan to collaborate with the Pentagon and other organizations, underscoring the significance of impeding trade that could strengthen the Russian military.

Earlier, Ukraine's Principal Intelligence Directorate (GUR) alleged that Russian forces were progressively making use of Starlink services in combat zones, based on eavesdropped discussions among Russian military staff.

The head of SpaceX, Elon Musk, refuted the claims, asserting that "not a single Starlink has been traded either directly or indirectly to Russia." Likewise, the Russian government dismissed any military acquisition of Starlink terminals from Russia, referencing the absence of approval in the nation.

Musk provided around 20,000 Starlink terminals to Ukraine just after the start of Russia's military actions in February 2022. Ukrainian soldiers utilize these terminals to control drones on the battle lines.

Musk disclosed in the previous year that he had turned down a request from Ukraine to initiate the Starlink service in Crimea. Despite the appeal from Kiev, SpaceX opted not to bypass regulations unless specifically instructed by the US administration, Musk clarified then. Even as he voiced his backing for Ukraine, Musk underscored his desire for a peaceful settling of the dispute.

The Post reports that the US Defense Department bought around 500 fresh Starlink terminals for Ukraine in June 2023, as highlighted in the letter from the House Democrats.
