US Democratic party investigates Elon Musk following allegations from Ukraine that SpaceX allowed Russia to utilize its satellites

American legislators have begun an investigation into Elon Musk's SpaceX, after Ukraine alleged that Russian soldiers are utilizing the company's Starlink satellite service in the battle lines of their current conflict, according to a report by the Washington Post on Thursday.
The news report states that Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia, US Representatives from Maryland and California respectively, wrote a letter on Wednesday. In this letter, they encouraged SpaceX to reveal any grievances concerning possible unlawful utilization of Starlink terminals.
Democratic legislators have voiced apprehensions regarding claims from Ukraine that Russian forces may have utilized Starlink terminals, which could possibly breach US sanction regulations.
Legislators have issued a warning to Gwynne Shotwell, the president of SpaceX, concerning Russia's utilization of Starlink. They also mentioned that Russia's access to Starlink could jeopardize the safety of Ukraine and potentially infringe on the US's national security.
"Raskin and Garcia expressed worry that you might not have suitable safety measures and guidelines established."
They also declared plans to interact with the Pentagon and various other organizations, underscoring the significance of thwarting trade that might strengthen the Russian military.
Earlier, Ukraine's primary intelligence agency, the GUR, alleged that Russian forces were making more frequent use of Starlink services in combat situations. This assertion was based on overheard discussions among Russian military staff.
The chief executive officer of SpaceX, Elon Musk, refuted the claims, asserting that "not a single Starlink has been bought by Russia, either directly or through a third party." Likewise, the Kremlin also dismissed any orders of Starlink terminals by the Russian military, pointing out the absence of approval in the nation.
Musk gave around 20,000 Starlink terminals to Ukraine shortly following the start of Russia's military action in February 2022. Ukrainian forces use these terminals to control drones at the battlefront.
Musk disclosed last year that he turned down a plea from Ukraine to initiate the Starlink service in Crimea. Despite the appeal from Kiev, SpaceX decided not to break rules unless specifically instructed by US authorities, as Musk clarified back then. Even though he voiced his backing for Ukraine, Musk underlined his inclination towards a non-violent settlement of the dispute.
The Post reported that the US Defense Department bought around 500 new Starlink terminals for Ukraine in June 2023, as referred to in the letter from the House Democrats.
