US and UK collaborate to unify public safety testing in AI systems

The US government, under the leadership of President Joe Biden, and the UK government, under the guidance of Rishi Sunak, have agreed to cooperate in unifying the testing of AI systems to guarantee their safety for the public. Both nations will also set up government-controlled institutes dedicated to AI safety.

The US and UK have revealed a fresh alliance to jointly tackle issues related to AI safety, according to Reuters. US Commerce Secretary, Gina Raimondo, and UK Technology Secretary, Michelle Donelan, inked an agreement in Washington to co-operate on creating a sophisticated AI framework.

This collaboration is a result of promises made during an AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park in November.

Raimondo stressed the significance of AI, labeling it as the crucial technology of our era. She expressed that the collaboration would hasten initiatives to confront national security threats and wider societal issues linked to AI.

The governments of both nations are setting up institutes dedicated to AI safety. The UK declared the formation of its institute in October, with the purpose of scrutinizing and experimenting on new AI models. The US followed suit in November, initiating its own institute aimed at assessing potential dangers from sophisticated AI systems. Currently, the American institute is in partnership with 200 businesses and organizations.

As part of a formal collaboration, the UK and the US intend to carry out shared testing activities on AI models that are available to the public. They are also contemplating staff swaps between organizations and are looking to forge similar partnerships with other nations to further the cause of AI security.

Generative AI, capable of producing text, images, and videos based on broad prompts, has stirred both enthusiasm and worries about job losses, manipulation of elections, and possible disastrous consequences.

During a shared interview with Reuters, Raimondo and Donelan emphasized the immediate need to tackle the risks associated with AI. Donelan underscored the importance of coordinated efforts as advanced AI models are on the verge of being launched. Raimondo has revealed intentions to converse about AI matters at a US-EU Trade and Technology Council assembly in Belgium.

The Biden administration is expected to reveal new members of its AI team shortly, utilizing resources from all over the US government. Both nations aim to exchange data regarding AI potential and threats, and jointly work on scientific research.

President Biden approved an executive directive in October intended to lessen the dangers associated with AI. The Commerce Department suggested in January that American cloud firms should oversee foreign entry to US data hubs for AI learning. In February, the UK revealed a strategy to put more than £100 million into setting up novel research centers and educating authorities on AI tech.

Raimondo voiced specific worry about the possible exploitation of AI for bioterrorism or simulating nuclear warfare, stressing the importance of having absolutely no allowance for such abilities.
