The US and UK unite to unify public safety testing in AI models

Under the leadership of President Joe Biden in the US and Rishi Sunak in the UK, the two governments are collaborating to unify AI testing and guarantee the safety of AI models for the general public. Both nations also plan to set up government-run institutions for AI safety.

The US and the UK have declared a fresh collaboration where they will join forces to tackle concerns related to the security of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, as per Reuters. A memorandum of understanding was signed by Gina Raimondo, the US Commerce Secretary, and Michelle Donelan, the British Technology Secretary, in Washington, promising to work together on creating an advanced AI model.

This collaboration is a result of promises made at an AI Safety Summit in Bletchley Park last November.

Raimondo underscored the significance of AI, labeling it as the hallmark technology of our era. She expressed that the collaboration would speed up initiatives to tackle national security threats and the wider societal issues linked with AI.

Both nations are setting up government-run institutes for AI safety. The UK declared the establishment of its institute in October to investigate and assess new forms of AI, while the US introduced its own safety institute in November to examine the dangers from sophisticated AI models. The American institute is currently partnering with 200 companies and organizations.

As part of their official collaboration, the UK and the US intend to carry out combined testing procedures on AI models that are available to the public. They are also looking into the possibility of staff swaps among the institutes and maintaining comparable collaborations with other nations to enhance AI security.

AI that can generate text, images, and videos in response to unrestricted commands has sparked both enthusiasm and apprehension over job loss, meddling with elections, and the possibility of disastrous consequences.

In a combined discussion with Reuters, both Raimondo and Donelan emphasized the immediate need to confront the dangers of AI. Donelan underscored the necessity for collaborative efforts, especially as more advanced AI systems are on the verge of being launched. Raimondo spoke of his intentions to bring up AI-related concerns in a forthcoming meeting of the US-EU Trade and Technology Council in Belgium.

The Biden government is set to disclose updates about its AI team shortly, utilizing resources from all over the US administration. The two nations aim to exchange data about AI potential and dangers and cooperate on scientific research.

In October, President Biden enacted an executive order with the objective of mitigating the hazards associated with AI. Subsequently, in January, the Commerce Department suggested that American cloud companies should be obliged to supervise foreign access to American data centers for AI training. In February, the UK declared its intention to invest more than £100 million in setting up novel research centers and educating regulators on AI technology.

Raimondo voiced specific apprehensions regarding the potential abuse of AI in bioterrorism or simulating nuclear warfare, underscoring the necessity for strict non-acceptance of these capabilities.
