Turkey's President, Erdogan, to Visit US on May 9 Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict, His First During Biden's Tenure
Turkey's leader, Tayyip Erdogan, is set to visit the United States on May 9. Reports from Turkish media suggest that Erdogan will once again express his calls for Israel to cease its assaults in Gaza and promote a two-state resolution to the issue.
For the first time during the end of Biden's presidency, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is set to visit the United States on May 9, according to a Turkish security representative who announced this news on Friday.
Reuters reports that the head of the Turkish MIT intelligence agency, Ibrahim Kalin, is scheduled to meet with members of the US House of Representatives on Friday. They will discuss Erdogan's proposed visit and other matters pertaining to both countries, as confirmed by an official.
Previously, numerous Turkish news sources had shared that Erdogan was set to visit the US, thanks to an invitation from President Joe Biden. The most recent face-to-face meeting between the two leaders took place this past July at a NATO Summit, but they've maintained regular phone communication.
Interestingly, the relationship between the US and Turkey had been tense due to Sweden's attempt to join NATO, which was initially opposed by Turkey. However, the bond between the two countries was restored when Turkey finally accepted the matter. Moreover, the meeting takes on greater importance given the recent war between Israel and Hamas, and the potential for this conflict to escalate across the whole of Western Asia.
Reports from Turkish press also suggested that Erdogan would repeat his call for Israel to halt its assaults in Gaza and advocate for a two-state resolution to the conflict.
Erdogan has, nevertheless, condemned the US for its steadfast backing of Israel during its conflict with Hamas. Earlier this year, in February, the Turkish leader strongly criticized the US, blaming it for the unsuccessful peace negotiations in the region since the war started following an attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7th of the previous year.
A significant topic anticipated to be the focus of the two leaders' discussion is the selling of F-16s to Turkey, as well as the process of updating and modernizing the jets that have been purchased to date.
