TikTok's issues in the US intensify, FTC probable to take legal action due to improper handling of children's data privacy and security

The problems that TikTok is facing in the US could escalate as a lengthy probe into their data management practices is nearing its conclusion. The US FTC is expected to either file a lawsuit or levy substantial penalties against TikTok and ByteDance for their mishandling of children's data privacy and security.

TikTok and ByteDance appear to be continually facing challenges in the US. Amid a continuing fight against a possible law that could result in its prohibition in the country, TikTok now confronts a potential crackdown by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Politico has reported that the FTC is close to wrapping up an extensive inquiry into a well-known social media platform, which could result in a significant legal case or hefty penalties.

The main area of scrutiny in the investigation supposedly concerns TikTok's privacy and security policies, especially how they manage children's user data.

Politico reports that the FTC is closely examining possible violations of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). There are also claims that the company misled people by incorrectly stating that individuals in China did not have access to the data of US users.

Furthermore, TikTok might be subjected to fines if it breaches the conditions set in its 2019 agreement with regulators concerning data protection.

The results of the FTC's inquiry are still unclear, but the increasing regulatory scrutiny presents major obstacles for TikTok as it strives to maintain its position in its biggest market. Importantly, after quick passage in the House, the Senate is now considering a bill that would force TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to sell off the app or face a complete ban in the US.

The Biden Administration has shown its backing for this action, mirroring attempts to force ByteDance to give up control of TikTok. Moreover, US intelligence authorities have informed legislators about the alleged national security risks linked with the app, further complicating TikTok's situation.
