TikTok's issues in the US escalate, with the FTC poised to take legal action for mismanagement of children's data privacy and security

TikTok's predicament in the US could intensify as a lengthy probe into its data practices nears its conclusion. The US FTC is expected to either file a lawsuit or levy hefty penalties against TikTok and ByteDance for their improper handling of children's data privacy and security.

TikTok and ByteDance appear to be constantly facing challenges in the US. Amidst a fight against possible new laws that could ban them in the United States, they now also have to deal with possible measures from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Politico has reported that the FTC is drawing close to the end of an extensive probe into a well-liked social media site, which could result in a significant legal action or hefty penalties.

The main focus of the inquiry allegedly concerns TikTok's privacy and security measures, specifically how it manages the user data of children.

Politico reports that the FTC is examining possible violations of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), as well as accusations that the company falsely claimed that people in China didn't have access to data from US users.

Moreover, TikTok might be penalized for breaching the conditions set in its 2019 agreement with regulatory bodies about data privacy.

The results of the FTC's probe into TikTok are still unclear. However, the increasing regulatory scrutiny is proving to be a major hurdle for TikTok as it tries to protect its strong position in its biggest market. Importantly, a bill that could force TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app or face a total ban in the US is currently under discussion in the Senate, following a quick pass in the House.

The Biden Administration has expressed its backing for this action, mirroring attempts to force ByteDance to give up its hold on TikTok. In addition, US intelligence officers have informed legislators about alleged national security risks related to the app, further complicating TikTok's situation.
