US government states that Microsoft's cybersecurity negligence led to China's successful attack

The US Cyber Safety Review Board issued a critical report stating that Microsoft could have averted the significant Chinese cyberattack last summer if it had prioritized cybersecurity.

A notable government consulting panel delivered a harsh criticism on Tuesday night, asserting that a Chinese spying effort against Microsoft last summer was avoidable and should not have occurred.

The American Cyber Safety Review Board, functioning under the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), has been investigating the Microsoft breach since the beginning of August, according to an Axios report.

In July, Microsoft's cloud networks were infiltrated by hackers supported by China. They successfully accessed the emails of approximately 25 government entities and officials, including Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and a number of State officials.

This event led to considerable unease throughout Washington, considering Microsoft's role as the main cloud service supplier for the US government.

The report reveals that the July breach was caused by preventable mistakes and Microsoft's inability to identify critical security compromises. The board dedicated seven months to probe and consult with other cloud service providers to determine Microsoft's missteps. The report underscores recent Microsoft choices that resulted in lowering the priority of enterprise security investments and stringent risk management.

Even though the situation was serious, three committee members didn't participate in the inquiry because of monetary or job-related conflicts. In the meantime, authorities cautioned that the group from the Chinese government responsible for the security violation could potentially aim at other high-profile American businesses in the future.

The publication of the report has revived worries among Microsoft's rivals and detractors, who contend that the company's supremacy in offering cloud services and business software presents threats to national security. Some specialists champion for the liberty to select the most appropriate technologies for particular requirements, underlining the significance of cybersecurity in the government and business sectors.

Microsoft has already started making internal modifications to its cybersecurity approach in response to the criticism. This includes broadening the accessibility to security logs and revamping its security plan. The firm values the probe's work and is scrutinizing the concluding report for potential security improvements.

Looking ahead, CISA aims to set a foundation of robust security protocols for cloud service providers. Their goal is to promote transparency and ongoing enhancements in cybersecurity methods.
