US government claims that China's assault on Microsoft could have been avoided with serious cybersecurity measures
The US Cyber Safety Review Board states in a harsh report that the significant Chinese breach against Microsoft last year could have been effortlessly thwarted if the firm had prioritized cybersecurity.
A notable government consulting group delivered a harsh criticism on Tuesday night, asserting that a Chinese spying effort aimed at Microsoft the previous summer could have been avoided and should not have occurred.
The American Cyber Safety Review Board, functioning under the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), has been investigating a security violation at Microsoft since the beginning of August, according to an Axios report.
In July, Microsoft's cloud networks were infiltrated by hackers allegedly supported by China. They successfully gained access to the emails of roughly 25 government entities and officials, such as Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and numerous State officials.
This event sparked considerable worry throughout Washington, considering Microsoft's role as the main cloud service supplier for the US government.
The report indicates that the July breach was a result of preventable mistakes and Microsoft's inability to identify a serious breach in its security measures. The board conducted a seven-month-long investigation and held discussions with other cloud service providers to identify Microsoft's mistakes. The report emphasizes recent decisions by Microsoft that resulted in a reduced focus on enterprise security investments and strict risk management.
Even though the circumstances were grave, three board members refrained from participating in the inquiry due to potential clashes in their financial or professional interests. Simultaneously, authorities cautioned that the Chinese government group behind the breach may potentially aim for other prominent US businesses in the future.
The unveiling of the report has sparked renewed worries among Microsoft's rivals and critics who contend that the company's supremacy in offering cloud services and business software could threaten national security. Some specialists champion the liberty to select the most suitable technologies for particular requirements, underscoring the significance of cybersecurity in government and business sectors.
Microsoft is already making internal adjustments to its cybersecurity approach in response to the feedback, including broadening access to security logs and revamping its security plan. The company values the work put into the investigation and is examining the final report to further improve its security measures.
Moving ahead, CISA intends to set up a foundation of robust security protocols for cloud service providers. The goal is to guarantee transparency and consistent enhancements in cybersecurity strategies.
