The US government asserts that China's assault on Microsoft could have been averted with proper attention to cybersecurity

According to a harsh report from the US Cyber Safety Review Board, Microsoft could have effortlessly thwarted the Chinese attack last summer had they given due importance to cybersecurity.

A prominent government consultation panel strongly criticized on Tuesday night, asserting that a Chinese spying effort aimed at Microsoft last summer could have been avoided and should not have occurred.

The American Cyber Safety Review Board, functioning under the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), has been investigating a security violation at Microsoft since the start of August, according to a news article by Axios.

In July, Microsoft's cloud networks detected intrusions from hackers believed to be supported by China. These cyber criminals managed to breach the email accounts of approximately 25 government institutions and officials. This included the email of Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and various State officials.

This event sparked substantial apprehension throughout Washington, considering Microsoft's role as the main cloud service supplier for the US government.

The report indicates that the July breach happened because of preventable mistakes and Microsoft's inability to identify the violation of key security protocols. Over the course of seven months, the board conducted an inquiry and held discussions with other cloud service providers to identify Microsoft's missteps. The report emphasizes Microsoft's latest choices that resulted in a decrease in prioritizing corporate security investments and stringent risk management.

Even though the situation was critical, three board members did not participate in the investigation because of economic or job-related issues. Simultaneously, authorities cautioned that the Chinese government group behind the violation could potentially aim for other top-tier US businesses down the line.

The unveiling of the report has sparked renewed worries among Microsoft's rivals and detractors, who contend that the company's supremacy in delivering cloud services and business software could threaten national security. There are specialists who champion the right to select the most suitable technologies for particular requirements, underscoring the significance of cybersecurity in governmental and business realms.

In reaction to the criticism, Microsoft has already initiated modifications in its cybersecurity practices, including broadening the availability of security logs and revamping its security plan. The firm values the inquiry's work and is examining the concluding report for further security improvements.

In the future, CISA intends to set a standard of robust security protocols for cloud service providers, aimed at maintaining openness and ongoing enhancement in cybersecurity initiatives.
