SpaceX 'constructing' numerous surveillance satellites for US authorities

It seems that SpaceX has secured the deal to design and produce a significant group of surveillance satellites for the US Department of Defense's National Reconnaissance Office. Named Starshield, these satellites will function in a synchronized cluster to observe terrestrial objectives.

In a noteworthy step for U.S. national security, SpaceX has allegedly received a contract from the U.S. Department of Defense's National Reconnaissance Office, under President Joe Biden's administration, to create and produce a large network of low-orbit surveillance satellites, according to a report by Reuters.

The network, named Starshield, is anticipated to drastically transform the US's intelligence collection abilities. It will function as a unified swarm to surveil terrestrial targets with unparalleled accuracy.

The Reuters report indicates that SpaceX's participation in this bold initiative extends from previous revelations by The Wall Street Journal. The Journal had previously revealed a $1.8 billion agreement inked in 2021 between SpaceX and a confidential government entity.

Starshield intends to set up an extensive monitoring system using numerous small imaging satellites. These satellites will work together with relay satellites to ensure uninterrupted data transmission.

The anticipated outcome is a constant flow of high-quality images encompassing all areas of the world, significantly improving the intelligence collection abilities of the United States to never-before-seen extents.

A person who spoke to Reuters emphasized the network's ability to make hiding almost unfeasible.

While both SpaceX and the NRO have not formally acknowledged the company's involvement in the project, a representative from the NRO informed Reuters about the agency's dedication to creating an unmatched intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance system in space.

The most recent agreement contributes to SpaceX's expanding collection of national security space projects. Recent news suggests that SpaceX nailed down a $70 million arrangement with the Space Force to supply satellite communications as part of the Starshield program.

It is important to mention that Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, has clearly distinguished Starshield as a separate project from the civilian-oriented Starlink constellation. He stresses that it is solely devoted to governmental and national security goals.
