US Democratic party investigates Elon Musk following allegations from Ukraine that SpaceX allowed Russia to utilize its satellites

Ukraine has alleged that SpaceX permitted Russia to use its satellites to establish connections at the war front. Both Elon Musk and SpaceX face accusations of non-compliance with the sanctions placed on Russia.

American legislators have begun an investigation into Elon Musk's SpaceX after allegations from Ukraine that Russian soldiers are using the firm's Starlink satellite service in their current conflict. This was reported by the Washington Post on Thursday.

The newspaper reported that Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia, US Representatives from Maryland and California respectively, wrote a letter on Wednesday. In it, they requested SpaceX to reveal any grievances about the possible unlawful utilization of Starlink terminals.

Democratic legislators voiced their worries about claims from Ukraine that Russian troops may have positioned Starlink terminals, possibly infringing on US sanction regulations.

Legislators have issued a warning to the president of SpaceX, Gwynne Shotwell, regarding Russia's use of Starlink. They further elaborated on the risk it presents to Ukraine's safety and the potential breach it creates in the United States' national security.

"Raskin and Garcia expressed worries that you might not have the necessary safeguards and protocols implemented."

They also declared plans to collaborate with the Pentagon and other organizations, underscoring the significance of obstructing commerce that might strengthen the Russian military.

Earlier, Ukraine's primary intelligence agency, the GUR, alleged that Russian forces were making growing use of Starlink services in combat situations. This assertion was based on overheard discussions among Russian military staff.

Elon Musk, the head of SpaceX, refuted the claims, asserting that "no Starlinks have been directly or indirectly marketed to Russia." The Russian government also dismissed any orders from the Russian military for Starlink devices, pointing to an absence of approval in the nation.

Following the initiation of Russia's military action in Ukraine in February 2022, Musk contributed around 20,000 Starlink terminals to the country. Ukrainian soldiers utilize these terminals to control drones along the battlefront.

Musk disclosed last year that he turned down a plea from Ukraine to launch the Starlink service in Crimea. Despite the appeal from Kiev, SpaceX decided not to break the rules unless directly instructed by the US leaders, Musk clarified back then. Even though he showed his backing for Ukraine, Musk restated his inclination towards a non-violent conclusion to the dispute.

The Post reported that the US Defense Department bought around 500 new Starlink terminals for Ukraine in June 2023, as noted in the letter from the House Democrats.
