US Democratic Party investigates Elon Musk following allegations from Ukraine that SpaceX permitted Russia to utilize its satellites

Ukraine has claimed that SpaceX allowed Russia to use its satellites for communication purposes at the warfront. Allegations have been raised against Elon Musk and SpaceX for supposedly disregarding the sanctions placed on Russia.

American legislators have started an investigation into SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk, after allegations surfaced from Ukraine. They claim that Russian soldiers have set up and are actively using SpaceX's Starlink satellite service on the battlefield during their current confrontation. This news was reported by the Washington Post on Thursday.

The newspaper reports that Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia, US Representatives from Maryland and California respectively, addressed a letter to SpaceX on Wednesday. They requested the company to reveal any grievances related to possible unlawful usage of Starlink terminals.

Democratic legislators voiced worries about claims from Ukraine that Russian troops may have used Starlink terminals, possibly breaching US sanction regulations.

Legislators have issued a warning to SpaceX's leader, Gwynne Shotwell, about Russia's usage of Starlink. They further explained that Russia's connection to Starlink could have grave implications for the safety of Ukraine and could also jeopardize America's national security.

"Raskin and Garcia expressed their worry that you might lack suitable safety measures and regulations."

They also declared plans to collaborate with the Pentagon and other departments, underscoring the significance of thwarting commerce that could strengthen the Russian armed forces.

Ukraine's primary intelligence agency, the GUR, has previously alleged that Russian soldiers are increasingly turning to Starlink services for battlefield communication, based on overheard discussions among Russian military staff.

Elon Musk, the head of SpaceX, refuted the claims, asserting that "no Starlinks have been directly or indirectly traded with Russia." Likewise, the Kremlin dismissed any Russian military procurement of Starlink terminals, attributing it to an absence of certification within the nation.

Musk gifted about 20,000 Starlink units to Ukraine following the commencement of Russia's military action in February 2022. Ukrainian soldiers utilize these terminals to run drones at the battlefront.

Musk disclosed last year that he turned down a request from Ukraine to initiate Starlink service in Crimea. Musk clarified that despite the plea from Kiev, SpaceX decided not to infringe on rules unless explicitly directed by the US authorities. Although he voiced his backing for Ukraine, Musk underscored his desire for a peaceful solution to the dispute.

The Post reported that the US Defense Department bought as many as 500 new Starlink terminals for Ukraine in June 2023, as stated in the letter from the House Democrats.
