US Democratic Party investigates Elon Musk following allegations by Ukraine that SpaceX permitted Russia to access its satellites

Ukraine alleges that SpaceX allowed Russia to utilize their satellites for communication purposes in the battle zones. There are claims that Elon Musk and SpaceX have not complied with the sanctions placed on Russia.

American legislators have begun an investigation into Elon Musk's SpaceX due to allegations from Ukraine that Russian forces are utilizing the company's Starlink satellite service in the current conflict, as cited by the Washington Post on Thursday.

The newspaper has reported that Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia, US Representatives from Maryland and California respectively, wrote a letter on Wednesday. They asked SpaceX to share any concerns or complaints about possible unlawful usage of Starlink terminals.

Democratic legislators have voiced worries about claims from Ukraine that Russian forces may have installed Starlink terminals, possibly breaching US sanction regulations.

Legislators have issued a warning to the president of SpaceX, Gwynne Shotwell, concerning Russia's use of Starlink. They highlighted that Russia's engagement with Starlink could potentially jeopardize Ukrainian safety and national security of the United States.

"Raskin and Garcia expressed worry that you might lack the necessary safeguards and procedures."

They also declared plans to collaborate with the Pentagon and other departments, underlining the significance of stopping commerce that could strengthen the Russian military.

Earlier, Ukraine's primary intelligence agency, the GUR, alleged that Russian forces were progressively using Starlink services in combat zones. This assertion was based on eavesdropped discussions among Russian military staff.

SpaceX's CEO, Elon Musk, refuted the claims, asserting that "not a single Starlink has been sold either directly or indirectly to Russia." The Russian government also dismissed any claims of the Russian military purchasing Starlink terminals, attributing it to the absence of certification in the nation.

Musk gave around 20,000 Starlink terminals to Ukraine just after the start of Russia's military campaign in February 2022. Ukrainian forces use these terminals to control drones on the front line.

Musk disclosed last year that he turned down a plea from Ukraine to initiate the Starlink service in Crimea. Regardless of the appeal from Kiev, SpaceX decided not to breach regulations without clear directives from US authorities, as Musk clarified back then. He voiced his backing for Ukraine, but also emphasised his desire for a non-violent solution to the dispute.

The Post reports that the US Defense Department bought as many as 500 Starlink terminals for Ukraine in June 2023, as referenced in the letter from the House Democrats.
