Elon Musk is under investigation by US democrats following allegations from Ukraine that SpaceX allowed Russia to utilize its satellites. It has been claimed that Russia used SpaceX's satellites for communication during their conflict with Ukraine. Furthermore, Elon Musk and SpaceX are being accused of not complying with the sanctions imposed on Russia.

American legislators have begun an investigation into Elon Musk's SpaceX in response to allegations from Ukraine. They claim that Russian soldiers have installed and are utilizing the Starlink satellite service from the company in the battle zones of the current conflict. This news was reported by the Washington Post on Thursday.

The newspaper reported that Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia, US Representatives from Maryland and California respectively, wrote a letter on Wednesday. In this letter, they requested SpaceX to reveal any objections related to the possible unlawful usage of Starlink terminals.

Democratic legislators voiced their worries about claims from Ukraine that Russian troops may have set up Starlink stations, possibly breaching US sanction rules.

Legislators have issued a warning to Gwynne Shotwell, the president of SpaceX, regarding Russia's use of Starlink. They have expressed their concern that if Russia gains access to Starlink, it could pose a significant risk to the security of Ukraine and also jeopardize the national security of the United States.

"Raskin and Garcia expressed their worry that you might lack the necessary safety measures and guidelines,"

They also declared their plans to collaborate with the Pentagon and other organizations, underlining the significance of stopping any commerce that might strengthen the Russian military.

Earlier, Ukraine's Primary Intelligence Division (GUR) alleged that Russian soldiers were making more frequent use of Starlink services in war zones, based on intercepted communications among Russian military staff.

The chief executive officer of SpaceX, Elon Musk, refuted the claims by asserting that "no Starlinks have been traded either directly or indirectly to Russia." Likewise, the Russian government dismissed any reports of the Russian military purchasing Starlink terminals, pointing out the absence of certification in the nation.

Musk provided roughly 20,000 Starlink terminals to Ukraine soon after the commencement of Russia's military actions in February 2022. Ukrainian soldiers use these terminals to control drones at the battlefront.

Musk disclosed in the previous year that he turned down a request from Ukraine to implement the Starlink service in Crimea. Although Kiev had requested it, SpaceX opted not to breach rules without explicit directives from the US authorities, Musk clarified at that time. He voiced his support for Ukraine, but stressed his desire for the dispute to be resolved peacefully.

As per the Post, the House Democrats' letter cited that the US Defense Department bought as many as 500 Starlink terminals for Ukraine in June 2023.
