We must revise our perspective on progress, emphasizing 'Green GDP': PM Modi to Bill Gates

The current standard we use to measure a nation's progress is significantly defective and requires reconsideration, according to Prime Minister Modi's conversation with Bill Gates. He conveyed to the philanthropist and co-founder of Microsoft that the global community should prioritize Green GDP.

In his discussion with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed a strong belief in the need for a significant change in our societal perception of economic growth. He emphasized the importance of shifting our focus towards a more environmentally-friendly viewpoint.

Prime Minister Modi stressed that the present measures for evaluating economic progress are damaging to the environment, highlighting the necessity to adopt criteria that consider environmental sustainability.

Currently, to measure progress, we examine which nation uses more steel, and which consumes more electricity per person. However, if we persist in using these factors to determine economic growth, we'll end up using more electricity and steel, leading to a surge in carbon emissions," stated PM Modi.

The Prime Minister emphasized the immediate need to reevaluate development models to favor climate-conscious decisions. He pointed out that presently, our measures of growth are detrimental to the environment.

He suggested the incorporation of a Green Gross Domestic Product (Green GDP) concept, promoting its merger with the traditional GDP structure.

Modi insists on the necessity for the world to adopt the idea of Green GDP as a metric for progress. He proposes that we need to question the portion of our GDP that is Green GDP, or the proportion of green jobs in the total employment sector. Modi stressed that there is a need to alter the global language, highlighting the congruence of his and Gates' views on climate change.

The momentum for climate action has surged following the G20 Summit in September 2023 according to a frank conversation between Gates and Modi. Modi emphasized how the rate of climate initiatives has significantly quickened after the summit which was hosted in India the previous year.

Modi stressed the importance of making eco-friendly solutions more readily available, advocating for a two-pronged strategy that cultivates innovation in sync with nature and practices that are conducive to the climate. He highlighted the need to rethink our definition of progress, warning against traditional indicators such as the use of steel and energy, which lead to increased carbon emissions.

Reflecting on previous initiatives, Modi reminisced about the joint efforts with past American and French leaders, as well as Gates, in pushing forward climate policies. He expressed disappointment over the minimal progress made, despite the extensive conversations held at the 2015 climate conference in Paris, France.

Gates praised Modi's administration for efforts like "Mission Innovation," which was initiated at the 2015 Paris climate conference. This joint venture involves 23 nations and the European Commission, with the goal of accelerating the shift to green energy and accomplishing the targets of the Paris Accord and net zero emissions.

India's crucial involvement in establishing "Mission Innovation" emphasizes its dedication to worldwide climate initiatives.
