We must reconsider our perspective on development, emphasizing 'Green GDP': PM Modi to Bill Gates

Our present way of measuring a nation's progress is significantly incorrect and requires revision, stated Prime Minister Modi to Bill Gates. He informed the charitable Microsoft co-founder that it's crucial for the world to take into account the Green GDP.

In his discussion with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged for a significant change in our societal approach to assessing economic progress, emphasizing the importance of shifting our attention towards a more environmentally-friendly outlook.

Prime Minister Modi stressed that the present measures used to evaluate economic progress are damaging to the environment. He highlighted the importance of adopting standards that consider environmental sustainability.

Currently, we measure progress by observing which nation uses the most steel, or consumes the most electricity per person. However, if we persist in using these criteria to assess an economy, our consumption of electricity and steel will only increase, leading to a rise in carbon emissions, as stated by Prime Minister Modi.

The Prime Minister emphasized the crucial need to reevaluate our development models to favor environmentally-friendly options. He stated, "Presently, all our measures of progress are against the climate."

He suggested the inclusion of a Green Gross Domestic Product (Green GDP) idea, promoting its incorporation into the standard GDP structure.

Modi advocates for the creation of a Green GDP to gauge progress worldwide. He suggests questioning how much of our GDP comprises the Green GDP or the proportion of green jobs in total employment. He calls for a shift in global language about this issue, reaffirming his and Gates' shared views on climate change.

Following the constructive discussion with Gates, Modi emphasized the growing enthusiasm for climate change measures since last year's G20 Summit held in India. He affirmed that climate-related efforts have significantly quickened after the summit in September 2023.

Modi stressed the importance of ensuring that eco-friendly solutions are widely available. He highlighted the need for a two-pronged strategy that encourages innovation in harmony with nature and practices that are beneficial to the climate. He pointed out the need to reassess our understanding of progress, warning against traditional indicators like steel use and energy consumption, which lead to increased carbon emissions.

Modi, reflecting on previous efforts, remembered working jointly with former presidents of the US and France, as well as Gates, to promote climate action plans. Despite extensive talks at the Paris climate conference in 2015, he expressed disappointment over the minimal progress made.

Gates praised Modi's administration for initiatives like "Mission Innovation," which was initiated during the Paris climate conference in 2015. This joint project involves 23 nations and the European Commission, and it's designed to hasten the shift to green energy and achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and net zero emissions.

India's crucial involvement in establishing "Mission Innovation" emphasizes its dedication to worldwide climate change initiatives.
