Prime Minister Modi urges Bill Gates to reconsider our perception of progress, emphasizing the significance of 'Green GDP'

The standard measure we use to assess a nation's growth is significantly flawed and requires reassessment, as stated by Prime Minister Modi to Bill Gates. He pointed out to the philanthropist and co-founder of Microsoft that the world should take Green GDP into account.

In his dialogue with Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for a significant change in the way we gauge economic growth as a society. He emphasized the importance of shifting our focus towards a more environmentally-friendly outlook.

PM Modi stressed that the current measures of economic expansion are damaging to the environment, highlighting the necessity to adopt metrics that consider environmental sustainability.

Currently, we measure progress by observing which nation uses more steel or electricity per person. However, if we persist in using these indicators to judge an economy, we'll inevitably use more electricity and steel, leading to a rise in carbon emissions, according to PM Modi.

The Prime Minister emphasized the critical need to reevaluate our development models to favor choices that are more beneficial to the climate. He stated, "At present, all our measures of growth are detrimental to the climate."

He suggested the incorporation of a Green Gross Domestic Product (Green GDP) concept, promoting its merger with the traditional GDP structure.

Modi expressed his belief that we need to evolve and adopt the idea of Green GDP to assess economic progress. He suggested that we should question how much of our GDP is represented by Green GDP, or how many jobs are considered green in our worldwide employment. He insists on the necessity of altering international terminologies, highlighting that his views on climate change coincide with those of Gates.

Following the open conversation with Gates, Modi emphasized the growing urgency of climate-related actions after the G20 Summit held in India the previous year. He stressed that the speed of climate-related initiatives has significantly increased after the summit in September 2023.

Modi stressed the importance of making eco-friendly solutions more readily available. He encouraged a two-pronged strategy that promotes innovation in harmony with nature and practices that favor the climate. He highlighted the need to rethink our definition of progress, warning against traditional indicators like steel usage and energy consumption, which lead to increased carbon emissions.

Reflecting on previous initiatives, Modi remembered working together with former US and French leaders, as well as Gates, to promote climate plans. He expressed his disappointment over the minimal progress made, in spite of extensive conversations at the 2015 Paris climate conference.

Gates praised Modi's administration for undertaking projects like "Mission Innovation," which was initiated at the Paris climate conference in 2015. This joint venture involves 23 nations and the European Commission and is geared towards accelerating the shift to green energy and achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and net zero emissions.

The crucial participation of India as an initiator of "Mission Innovation" highlights its dedication to worldwide climate change initiatives.
