President Erdogan’s Upcoming US Visit: A Critical Discussion on Israel-Hamas Conflict and Bilateral Issues

During the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is scheduled to be in the US on May 9, marking his first visit during Biden's presidency. Turkish news outlets have also indicated that Erdogan is expected to renew his call for Israel to cease hostilities in Gaza and advocate for a two-state resolution to the issue.

For the first time near the end of Biden's tenure, Turkey's President Tayyip Erdogan is set to visit the United States on May 9, according to a Turkish security official who announced this on Friday.

Reuters reports that Ibrahim Kalin, the chief of Turkey's MIT intelligence agency, is scheduled for a meeting with members of the US House of Representatives. The meeting, to be held on Friday, will focus on Erdogan's proposed visit and other matters concerning both countries, as stated by an official

Previously, numerous Turkish news sources had stated that Erdogan was set to visit the US due to an invitation from President Joe Biden. The most recent face-to-face meeting between these two leaders took place last July at a NATO Summit, but they have maintained regular communication via phone.

By chance, the relationship between the US and Turkey had been strained due to Sweden's attempt to join NATO, which was at first obstructed by Istanbul. However, the frosty relations thawed and returned to a normal state after Turkey gave the green light. Moreover, this meeting gains importance considering the recent war between Israel and Hamas, and the potential escalation of the conflict throughout all of West Asia.

Reports from Turkish media also suggested that Erdogan would once again call for Israel to halt its assaults in Gaza and advocate for a two-state resolution to the conflict.

Erdogan has voiced his criticism against the US for its constant backing of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. Earlier this year in February, the President of Turkey blamed the US for the ongoing unsuccessful peace negotiations in the region since the war initiated following an attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7 of the previous year.

The sale of F-16s to Turkey and the process of modernizing and upgrading the jets that have been purchased up until now are anticipated to be a major focus for the two leaders.
