President Erdogan’s Pivotal US Visit amid Israel-Hamas Conflict: Implications and Expectations

Amid the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is set to visit the US on May 9, marking his first visit during Biden's administration. Reports from Turkish media suggest that Erdogan plans to repeat his plea for Israel to halt its assaults in Gaza and to advocate for a two-state resolution to the issue.

In an unprecedented event occurring towards the end of Biden's presidency, the President of Turkey, Tayyip Erdogan, is set to visit the United States on May 9, according to a Turkish security official who made the announcement on Friday.

Reuters reports that the chief of Turkey's MIT intelligence agency, Ibrahim Kalin, is set to hold a meeting with members of the US House of Representatives this Friday. They will be discussing Erdogan's forthcoming visit and other issues concerning both nations, as informed by an official.

Previously, it was broadly covered in Turkish news that Erdogan was expected to visit the US, following an invite from President Joe Biden. The most recent face-to-face encounter between the two leaders took place last July during a NATO Summit, but they have regularly communicated over the phone since then.

Interestingly, the relationship between the US and Turkey, which had been tense due to Sweden's NATO application initially being rejected by Istanbul, has returned to normal after Turkey gave its approval. Additionally, this meeting is particularly important considering the recent war between Israel and Hamas and the potential for this conflict to spread across the whole of Western Asia.

Reports from Turkish press suggested that Erdogan was set to again call for Israel to cease its assaults in Gaza and endorse the two-state resolution to the conflict.

Erdogan, on the other hand, has expressed disapproval of the US for its steadfast backing of Israel during its conflict with Hamas. Earlier this year in February, the Turkish leader vehemently criticized the US, blaming it for the ongoing unsuccessful peace negotiations in the area since the war erupted following an attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7 last year.

Another crucial topic that is anticipated to dominate the discussions between the two leaders is the purchase of F-16s by Turkey and the upgrading and modernization of the jets they have obtained up to this point.
