We should reconsider our perspective on progress, emphasizing 'Green GDP': PM Modi to Bill Gates

The existing measure we use to assess a nation's growth is seriously deficient and requires reassessment, Prime Minister Modi informed Bill Gates. He expressed to the philanthropist and Microsoft originator that the globe should take into account Green GDP.

In his discussion with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed the need for a significant change in our societal approach to measuring economic progress. He emphasized the importance of shifting our focus towards a more environmentally friendly outlook.

Prime Minister Modi stressed that the present measures for evaluating economic progress are damaging to the environment, highlighting the necessity of adopting indicators that consider environmental sustainability.

Currently, we measure progress by observing which nation uses more steel or has higher per capita electricity consumption. However, if we persist in using these criteria to assess an economy, we will end up using more electricity and steel, leading to a rise in carbon emissions, according to Prime Minister Modi.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of reevaluating our development models to favor climate-conscious decisions, as he stated, "At present, our measures of progress are all against the climate."

He suggested the incorporation of a Green Gross Domestic Product (Green GDP) idea, promoting its amalgamation into the standard GDP structure.

Modi strongly advocates for the creation of a Green GDP that would gauge global progress. He suggests we should question the proportion of our GDP that is environmentally friendly or the percentage of green jobs in the total employment market. He underlined the need for a shift in the world's terminology, stressing that his views on climate change align with those of Gates.

The momentum for climate-related actions has grown significantly following the G20 Summit held in India in 2023, as noted by Modi in his open discussion with Gates. He emphasized that climate-focused initiatives have evidently picked up speed after the summit in September 2023.

Modi stressed the importance of making eco-friendly solutions widely available, advocating for a two-pronged strategy that encourages innovation in harmony with nature and practices that are beneficial to the climate. He highlighted the need to reconsider what constitutes progress, warning against traditional indicators like steel use and energy consumption, which lead to increased carbon emissions.

Reflecting on previous initiatives, Modi remembered working together with the former US and French presidents, as well as Gates, to further climate change solutions. He expressed disappointment at the insufficient progress made even after exhaustive talks at the 2015 Paris climate conference.

Gates praised Modi's administration for undertakings like "Mission Innovation," which was initiated at the 2015 Paris climate conference. This joint venture involves 23 nations and the European Commission, with the goal of accelerating the shift to green energy and achieving the targets of the Paris Agreement and net zero emissions.

India's significant position as a founding member of "Mission Innovation" highlights its dedication to worldwide climate initiatives.
