PM Modi advises Bill Gates to reconsider our perception of progress and emphasize 'Green GDP'

Prime Minister Modi expressed to Bill Gates that our present method of assessing a nation's growth is significantly faulty and requires reassessment. He informed the charitable Microsoft co-founder that the global community should take into account the Green GDP.

In his discussion with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed on the need for a significant change in our societal approach to assessing economic growth. He emphasized the importance of shifting our focus towards more environmentally-friendly practices.

Prime Minister Modi stressed that the present measures for assessing economic expansion are environmentally damaging, highlighting the necessity to adopt indicators that consider environmental sustainability.

Currently, we measure progress by looking at which nation uses more steel or has a higher per capita electricity consumption. However, if we keep using these metrics to evaluate an economy, we'll end up using more electricity and steel, ultimately leading to a rise in carbon emissions, stated Prime Minister Modi.

The Prime Minister emphasized the immediate need to reevaluate our development models to favor climate-conscious decisions. He stated, "At present, all our measures of growth are against the climate."

He suggested the incorporation of a Green Gross Domestic Product (Green GDP) idea, arguing for its amalgamation into the traditional GDP structure.

Modi expressed his conviction that the globe needs to adopt the idea of a Green GDP as a yardstick for progress. He proposed that we should question what portion of our GDP is Green GDP, or amongst our total jobs, how many are environmentally friendly? He stressed the need to modify worldwide jargon, underscoring the concurrence between his and Gates' viewpoints on global warming.

Following the G20 summit in September 2023, there has been a significant increase in climate initiatives. In his open discussion with Gates, Modi emphasized the growing enthusiasm for climate action since the G20 Summit was held in India the previous year. He reiterated that the speed of climate-related initiatives has significantly sped up after the 2023 summit.

Modi stressed the importance of making eco-friendly solutions more readily available, highlighting a two-fold strategy of promoting innovation in harmony with nature and practices that are beneficial to the climate. He identified the need to reassess our definition of progress, warning against traditional indicators like steel consumption and energy use, which lead to increased carbon emissions.

Modi, reflecting on previous efforts, reminisced about working together with past U.S. and French leaders, as well as Gates, to promote climate change strategies. He expressed disappointment over the scant progress made, even after thorough talks at the 2015 climate conference in Paris, India.

Gates praised Modi's administration for implementing programs like "Mission Innovation," which was initiated at the Paris climate conference in 2015. This joint endeavor, involving 23 nations and the European Commission, seeks to speed up the shift to renewable energy and accomplish the goals of the Paris Agreement and achieving net zero emissions.

India's crucial position as an inaugural member of "Mission Innovation" highlights its dedication to international climate initiatives.
