VIEW: ISRO's 'Pushpak' aircraft, India's initial Reusable Launch Vehicle triumphantly finishes trial landing

The Pushpak launch vehicle signifies India's trailblazing effort to transform space exploration, and its victorious landing signifies further progress in this venture. The whole project was accomplished with approximately Rs 100 crore.

On Friday, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) accomplished a significant feat by successfully executing the landing mission of its Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV), 'Pushpak', from the Aeronautical Test Range (ATR) in Challakere, close to Karnataka's Chitradurga. The event was graced by the presence of ISRO chairman S Somanath and other high-ranking officials.

ISRO has done it once more! The space agency announced that the winged vehicle, Pushpak (RLV-TD), successfully landed on its own with great accuracy on the runway, following its release from an unusual position.

The airborne craft, named Pushpak, was elevated by a Chinook helicopter from the Indian Airforce and was set free from a height of 4.5 km. After being let go 4km away from the airstrip, Pushpak independently navigated towards the airstrip, making necessary cross-range adjustments. It successfully touched down on the airstrip, using its brake parachute, landing gear brakes, and nose wheel steering system to come to a complete stop, as per the statement released by ISRO.

The third trial of Pushpak, a sequence of experiments designed to enhance its automated landing skills in intricate scenarios, has recently taken place. Although Pushpak's practical implementation is still a few years off, this accomplishment emphasizes India's intense drive to make space accessibility more cost-effective, as emphasized by Mr. Somanath.

The RLV-LEX-02 Experiment: ISRO has done it again! The winged vehicle, Pushpak (RLV-TD), has successfully and autonomously landed on the runway with great accuracy after its release from a non-standard position.

The Pushpak launch vehicle symbolizes India's groundbreaking effort to transform space exploration, and its triumphant landing signifies further progress in this mission. The project has been undergoing development for more than ten years and made a substantial advancement in April of the previous year. This was when Pushpak successfully showed autonomous landing abilities after being discharged from an Indian Air Force Chinook helicopter. This achievement moved Pushpak nearer to its objective of acquiring orbital re-entry capabilities.

The Pushpak project, with a funding of approximately Rs 100 crore, not only illustrates India's technological capabilities but also sets the foundation for upcoming ventures. This includes the ambitious goal of setting up the Bhartiya Antariksha Station by 2035.

On his latest trip to the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was updated by Somanath on the advancements of the Pushpak vehicle. The development of the RLV spacecraft kicked off in January 2012, following the endorsement of its design by the National Review Committee. Following this, the first model, dubbed RLV-TD (Technology Demonstrator), was created.

Significant progress in creating heat-resistant materials to safeguard spacecrafts during atmospheric re-entry has been achieved through sophisticated supercomputer modeling and partnerships with organizations such as the National Aerospace Laboratory and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The initial launch of the RLV occurred in 2016, which was a notable landmark in India's space exploration history.
