VIEW: ISRO's 'Pushpak' aircraft, India's inaugural Reusable Launch Vehicle successfully accomplishes test landing

The Pushpak launch vehicle signifies India's groundbreaking effort to transform space accessibility, and its triumphant landing indicates further progress in this endeavor. The whole project was executed for approximately Rs 100 crore.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) reached an important achievement on Friday by successfully carrying out the landing mission of its Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV), called 'Pushpak', from the Aeronautical Test Range (ATR) in Challakere, close to Karnataka's Chitradurga. The launch was witnessed by ISRO's chairman S Somanath and other high-ranking officials.

ISRO has done it once more! The winged vehicle, Pushpak (RLV-TD), successfully made a precise autonomous landing on the runway after being launched from an irregular position, as announced by the space agency on X.

The airborne apparatus, known as Pushpak, was elevated by a Chinook helicopter from the Indian Air Force and was let go at a height of 4.5 km. After being set free 4km away from the runway, Pushpak independently navigated towards the runway while making lateral adjustments. It accurately landed on the runway and stopped using its brake parachute, landing gear brakes, and the nose wheel steering system, according to a statement from ISRO.

This was the third trial run of Pushpak, a series of trials designed to improve its automated landing abilities in more challenging situations. The full implementation of Pushpak is still a few years off, but this milestone emphasizes India's aggressive plans to reduce the cost of space exploration, a point stressed by Mr. Somanath.

The RLV-LEX-02 Experiment by ISRO was a success once again! The winged vehicle, Pushpak (RLV-TD), was able to land on its own with great accuracy on the runway, even after being released from an unusual position. The impressive feat was shared by ISRO on their Twitter account on March 22, 2024.

The Pushpak launch vehicle is an innovative attempt by India to transform space travel, and its successful landing signifies further progress in this endeavor. This project, which has been in the works for more than ten years, made a substantial advancement in April of the previous year when Pushpak proved its ability to land independently after being launched from an Indian Air Force Chinook helicopter. This achievement moved Pushpak nearer to its objective of gaining orbital re-entry capabilities.

The Pushpak project, which involved around Rs 100 crore of investment, not only demonstrates India's advanced technology but also sets the foundation for upcoming ventures. This includes the aspirational goal of setting up the Bhartiya Antariksha Station by the year 2035.

On his recent trip to the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received an update from Somanath regarding the development of the Pushpak vehicle. The construction of the RLV spacecraft started in January 2012 after getting the green light from the National Review Committee. Following this, the initial model, referred to as RLV-TD (Technology Demonstrator), was created.

Through the use of sophisticated supercomputer modeling and the teamwork between organizations such as the National Aerospace Laboratory and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), considerable progress has been achieved in creating materials that can withstand extreme heat, thereby safeguarding spacecraft during their re-entry into the atmosphere. The inaugural launch of the RLV occurred in 2016, symbolizing a major landmark in India's voyage into space exploration.
