President Erdogan’s Historic Visit to the US: A Discussion on Bilateral Issues, Israel-Hamas War, and F-16 Sale Amid Strained Relationships

During the conflict between Israel and Hamas, President Erdogan of Turkey is scheduled to visit the US on May 9, marking his first visit during Biden's administration. Reports from Turkish media indicate that Erdogan plans to repeat his call for Israel to cease hostilities in Gaza and advocate for a two-state resolution to the issue.

For the first time during the end of Biden's term, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is set to visit the United States on May 9th, as confirmed by a Turkish security official last Friday.

As per Reuters, Ibrahim Kalin, the chief of Turkey's MIT intelligence agency, is set to have a meeting with members of the US House of Representatives this Friday. The agenda will include discussions about Erdogan's proposed visit and other mutual concerns, said the official.

Previously, numerous Turkish news sources had shared that a visit to the US had been planned for Erdogan, following an invitation from President Joe Biden. The most recent face-to-face interaction between the two leaders took place at a NATO Summit in July. Nevertheless, they have maintained regular communication through phone calls.

Coincidentally, the relationship between the US and Turkey had been tense due to Sweden's attempt to join NATO, which was initially halted by Istanbul. However, things went back to normal after Turkey gave the green light. Furthermore, the meeting is particularly important considering the recent war between Israel and Hamas and the potential for this conflict to escalate throughout all of Western Asia.

Reports from Turkish outlets also indicated that Erdogan would once again call for Israel to cease their assaults in Gaza and advocate for a two-state resolution to the issue.

Erdogan, on the other hand, has criticized the US for its staunch support of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. Earlier this year in February, the Turkish leader blamed the US for the ongoing failure of peace negotiations in the region. This follows the war that erupted after Hamas launched an attack on Israel on October 7 of the previous year.

Another crucial topic that is anticipated to dominate the discussions between the two leaders would be the selling of F-16s to Turkey and the process of upgrading and modernizing the jets that have been purchased until now.
