PM Modi assures Bill Gates that India will spearhead the 4th Industrial Revolution, with AI playing a significant part

During a discussion with PM Modi, Bill Gates noted the continuous enhancement and enrichment of India's Digital Public Infrastructure. PM Modi elaborated on the immense promise of AI in India and the overall contribution of technology to improving the quality of life for Indians.

During a discussion about India's technological revolution, Prime Minister Modi explained to Bill Gates that India's development was hindered by British colonization during the initial two industrial revolutions. Nonetheless, he is confident that India will compensate for this during the fourth industrial revolution.

In the past, during the initial two industrial revolutions, our progress was hindered due to our colonial status. However, currently, as we navigate through the fourth industrial revolution, digital technology stands at its heart. I firmly believe that India stands to significantly benefit during this phase," said the Prime Minister. He further stated that India has the capacity to be at the forefront of this 4th revolution.

Prime Minister Modi detailed the ways in which India has utilized artificial intelligence in various areas of administration and social life. He referred to instances from the 2023 G20 Summit and projects such as the NaMo App. He also pointed out how he employed AI during the G20 summit to translate his speeches into various languages. "We should employ a technology like ChatGPT to continually better ourselves," he stated.

Gates praised the continuous advancements and enrichment of India's Digital Public Infrastructure. He mentioned that many are aware of the digital identity (Aadhar) and digital payment systems (UPI) in the country. The government has successfully digitized all payment programs, leading to significant savings and improved access. In the subsequent stage, India expanded to other areas, including offering farmers easy access to advice and knowledge, handling health records, and tutoring children. He stated that we are currently at a point where AI enhancements built on this infrastructure will further enhance its value.

In a jovial conversation, Prime Minister Modi shared with Bill Gates that AI is deeply embedded in India, so much so that even infants are engaged with AI. He humorously mentioned that in India, the term for 'mother' is 'Aai'. He playfully suggested that nowadays, a newborn child might say both 'Aai' and 'AI', indicating the rise of tech-savviness among the youngest generation.

He further stated, "Utilizing AI as a supernatural device might potentially result in severe unfairness. If AI becomes a crutch because of lethargy…then we're heading in the wrong direction. I should challenge ChatGPT and aim to surpass AI…"

During their discussion, both leaders touched upon the drawbacks and limitations of AI. "As Microsoft marks its 25th anniversary in India, I urged our team here in Hyderabad to improve the precision of our AI models. For instance, Copilot offers suggestions, but we still need to review and make the final decisions."

Gates proceeded to question, "AI presents a substantial opportunity, yet it also carries certain difficulties. What is India's strategy for dealing with this?" Prime Minister Modi acknowledged that AI is not without its complications. Issues like deepfakes and disinformation, for instance, pose severe global problems. The Prime Minister also suggested solutions to limit its adverse effects. "If such a beneficial tool (AI) is handed over to someone without appropriate training, it could potentially be abused," he stated.

"The Prime Minister suggested that AI-generated content should have distinct watermarks to prevent anyone from being fooled. He noted that in a democracy like India, anyone has the ability to use deepfake. It's vital to recognize that such content is created by AI. He stressed the need for considering guidelines on its usage."

Bill Gates recognized the difficulties tied to AI, yet he remained hopeful about its capacity to bring about beneficial changes. He mentioned that we are still in the initial stages of AI development. AI might accomplish tasks that appear challenging, yet fail at simpler ones. Although AI presents immense possibilities, it does carry a handful of issues.

Information and confidentiality.

The matters of data and privacy are significant, a fact acknowledged by both Gates and Prime Minister Modi. Gates posed the question, "In the current scenario of artificial intelligence, data holds immense importance. There are issues related to people's privacy. How can we establish equilibrium in such a situation?"

"The Prime Minister emphasized the utmost importance of data security. He also added that despite having legal measures in place in India, raising public consciousness on this matter is just as crucial."

He proceeded to illustrate how Digilocker has revolutionized things in India. According to him, universities have started saving certificates and degrees in the cloud, a measure that is not only cost-friendly but also effective. In addition, there used to be a demand for strict compliance needs. However, they pushed for a simplified approach, proposing that data should be stored in the cloud using shared IDs, which would permit us to directly access required information.

The Prime Minister also disclosed that while technology used to primarily facilitate services, it now significantly contributes to improving the quality of life for people in India.
