Prime Minister Modi asserts India's leading role in the 4th Industrial Revolution, with AI having a significant impact: PM Modi tells Bill Gates.

During a discussion with PM Modi, Bill Gates commented on the continuous enhancement and enrichment of India's Digital Public Infrastructure. PM Modi elaborated on the immense possibilities of AI in India and the overall contribution of technology in improving the quality of life for Indian residents.

During a discussion with Bill Gates regarding India's technological revolution, Prime Minister Modi expressed to Gates that India's development as a country was hindered during the first two industrial revolutions due to British colonization. Despite this, PM Modi is confident that the country will compensate for this in the fourth industrial revolution.

In the past, during the initial two industrial revolutions, our progress was hindered due to our status as a colony. Today, as we find ourselves in the throes of a fourth industrial revolution, digitalization is at the heart of it. I firmly believe that India stands to benefit greatly from this," stated the Prime Minister. He also emphasized that India possesses the capacity to spearhead this 4th revolution.

Prime Minister Modi detailed how India has utilized Artificial Intelligence (AI) in numerous sectors of government and societal operations. He referenced instances from the G20 Summit in 2023 and projects such as the NaMo App. The Prime Minister further highlighted his use of AI at the G20 summit to translate his speeches and discourses into various languages. He suggested that technologies like ChatGPT should be employed to continually enhance one's abilities.

Gates praised the ongoing improvements and enrichment of India's Digital Public Infrastructure. He noted that many are aware of the Aadhar identity and UPI digital payment systems. The government has successfully digitized all payment programs, leading to significant cost savings and increased access. Furthermore, India has ventured into various other areas, such as providing farmers with easy advice and knowledge access, managing health records, and tutoring children. Gates highlighted that we are currently at a point where AI advancements, built on top of these existing systems, will enhance the value even further.

In a humorous tone, PM Modi explained to Bill Gates that AI is deeply integrated in India, so much so that even infants are familiar with it. He humorously mentioned, "In India, we use 'Aai' to address our mothers. Now, it's as if when a baby is born, they say 'Aai' and also AI, indicating how technologically advanced our younger generation has become."

He further stated, "Using AI as some sort of miraculous device could potentially result in severe unfairness. If AI is depended on due to idleness… then it's a misguided approach. I ought to compete with ChatGPT and aim to surpass AI…"

During their discussion, the leaders also touched upon the downsides and limitations of AI. With Microsoft marking its 25th anniversary in India, I was urging the Hyderabad team to enhance the precision of our AI models. For instance, while Copilot offers suggestions, the ultimate decision still requires our review.

Gates proceeded to inquire, "AI holds immense potential, yet it presents several obstacles. What is India's strategy to tackle this?" Prime Minister Modi acknowledged that AI is not without its difficulties. Issues such as deepfakes and misinformation are significant global concerns. The Prime Minister also suggested ways to lessen its adverse effects. "If a beneficial tool like AI is handed to someone without adequate training, it can be prone to misuse," he stated.

The Prime Minister stated that we need to begin by ensuring AI-created content is clearly marked to prevent any deception. In a democratic nation such as India, the use of deepfake is open to anyone. It's essential to recognize that this content is created by AI. We must consider certain guidelines and restrictions.

Bill Gates has recognized the difficulties that come with AI, yet he remains hopeful about its capacity for beneficial change. He expressed, "We're still in the initial stages of AI… It will accomplish tasks that seem difficult and yet, may struggle with tasks that appear simple. AI presents a vast potential, however it does bring along certain challenges."

Information and confidentiality.

Data and confidentiality are significant matters that both Gates and PM Modi acknowledge. Gates posed a question, "In the current world dominated by Artificial Intelligence, data holds immense value. However, individuals are apprehensive about their privacy. How can we strike a balance?"

"The Prime Minister emphasized that data protection is of utmost importance. He added that although India has established legal provisions for this, the public's understanding of the issue is equally crucial," stated the PM.

He proceeded to illustrate how Digilocker has revolutionized practices in India. Universities have begun to keep academic credentials in the cloud, which proves to be both economical and effective. In the past, there was a strong emphasis on strict compliance requirements. We proposed a more straightforward approach, recommending that data be transferred to the cloud using shared IDs, thereby allowing us direct access to the required information.

The Prime Minister also disclosed that although technology was previously just a facilitator for various services, it now significantly contributes to simplifying the lives of people in India.
