IBM Joins Tech Layoff Trend: Announces Job Cuts in Marketing and Communication Divisions Amid AI Upskilling Push

3 min read

In a brief seven-minute meeting, IBM declared the dismissal of staff from two sectors. IBM's head of communications, Jonathan Adashek, declared massive layoffs in the marketing and communication sectors, coming months after CEO Arvind Krishna proclaimed a focus on "upskilling" for an AI-based business landscape.

IBM has once again become a part of the tech dismissal group this year, as it declared layoffs within its marketing and communications departments, without specifying the total count.

IBM's head of communications, Jonathan Adashek, declared the reduction during a roughly seven-minute meeting with the relevant departments, according to sources mentioned in a CNBC report.

The news arrives just a few months following IBM's CEO, Arvind Krishna, stating in December that the company plans to concentrate on enhancing the skills of its staff in a business setting driven by artificial intelligence.

Becoming part of the AI

IBM has been perceived as lagging behind for a while now, especially since its rivals – Amazon, Google, and Microsoft – have amplified their efforts to contend in the artificial intelligence (AI) competition.

IBM declared in August that it would substitute almost 8,000 roles with AI, subsequently launching a 'development studio' called Watson X to "educate, refine, and implement" machine-learning systems.

During its profit announcement in January 2023, IBM revealed that it was eliminating 3,900 jobs. Subsequently, its CEO announced a recruitment freeze, suggesting that he could envision AI and automation replacing 30% of their workforce over the next five years.

The firm's Chief Financial Officer, James Kavanaugh, however, stated that they would persist in recruiting for particular roles and anticipate the total number of employees to remain roughly consistent as the year concludes.

According to a study, by the close of 2023, IBM employed roughly 288,000 individuals.

The narrative of technology downsizing persists.

Approximately 204 technology firms have eliminated close to 50,000 positions in the current year, as per the data from Layoffs.fyi. Big tech corporations such as Alphabet, Amazon, and Unity have declared job reductions, with the highest number of layoffs occurring in January.

The sector continues to struggle with changes after the pandemic, a time that saw a surge in tech recruitment.

The possibility of excessive recruitment led to a challenging 2023, as corporations such as Amazon and Meta dismissed tens of thousands of their staff.
