IBM Joins Tech Layoff Trend: Announces Major Job Cuts in Marketing and Communication Divisions

During a brief seven-minute conference, IBM declared the dismissal of staff from two departments. Jonathan Adashek, IBM's primary communications executive, disclosed the significant reduction in workforce in the marketing and communication sectors, following CEO Arvind Krishna's declaration of "upskilling" in a business landscape influenced by artificial intelligence.

IBM has once again become a part of the technology companies that are reducing their workforce this year. They revealed that they are letting go of employees from their marketing and communications departments, though they did not disclose the precise number.

Jonathan Adashek, the head of communications at IBM, revealed the reduction during a meeting of roughly seven minutes with the relevant departments, according to sources referenced in a CNBC report.

Just a few months ago, IBM's CEO Arvind Krishna announced in December that the company will concentrate on enhancing the skills of its workforce to adapt to a business landscape dominated by artificial intelligence.

IBM has often been perceived as lagging, particularly since its rivals Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have intensified their engagement in the competition for artificial intelligence (AI) supremacy.

IBM disclosed in August that almost 8,000 positions would be replaced by AI, subsequently introducing a 'development studio' called Watson X designed to "educate, refine, and implement" machine-learning prototypes.

During its profit declaration in January 2023, IBM communicated that it was eliminating 3,900 jobs. Subsequently, the company's CEO indicated a halt in recruitment, suggesting that he could foresee AI and automation taking over 30 per cent of the workforce within the next five years.

Nonetheless, the firm's Chief Financial Officer, James Kavanaugh, stated that the company will keep recruiting for specific roles and anticipates the total number of employees to remain roughly equivalent as the year comes to an end.

According to a study, by the close of 2023, IBM employed roughly 288,000 individuals.

The narrative of technological downsizing persists.

Approximately 204 technology firms have eliminated nearly 50,000 positions this year, as per the data from Layoffs.fyi. Tech giants such as Alphabet, Amazon, and Unity have all revealed job reductions, with the most significant number of layoffs occurring in January.

The sector continues to struggle with changes following the pandemic, during which there was a surge in tech recruitment.

The possible excessive hiring led to a challenging year in 2023, as firms such as Amazon and Meta had to lay off tens of thousands of their workforce.
