IBM Joins Tech Layoff Trend: Announces Job Cuts in Marketing and Communication Divisions Amid AI Upskilling Initiative

In a brief meeting lasting seven minutes, IBM reveals layoffs in two departments. IBM's head of communications, Jonathan Adashek, declared significant job reductions in the marketing and communication sectors, months after CEO Arvind Krishna proclaimed a need for "upskilling" in a business setting dominated by AI.

IBM has once again become a part of the technology sector's layoff group this year, revealing that it is letting go of staff from its marketing and communications departments, without specifying the precise count.

Jonathan Adashek, the head of communications at IBM, revealed a reduction during a roughly seven-minute meeting with the relevant departments, according to sources quoted by a CNBC report.

The news arrives just a few months following IBM's CEO, Arvind Krishna, stating in December that the firm will concentrate on enhancing the skills of its workers in a business setting driven by AI.

IBM has been perceived as lagging for quite some time now, particularly since its rivals such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have intensified their pursuits in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

In August, IBM disclosed that almost 8,000 positions would be substituted with AI and subsequently introduced a 'development studio' dubbed Watson X to "educate, fine-tune, and implement" machine-learning models.

During the profit announcement in January 2023, IBM revealed plans to eliminate 3,900 roles. The company's CEO subsequently indicated a halt in recruitment, suggesting that AI and automation could potentially replace 30% of the workforce within the next five years.

Nonetheless, James Kavanaugh, the CFO of the company, stated that they will persist in recruiting for specific roles and anticipates that the total number of employees will remain roughly equal as the year concludes.

According to a study, by the conclusion of 2023, IBM employed approximately 288,000 individuals.

The narrative of technological reduction carries on.

Approximately 204 technology firms have eliminated nearly 50,000 positions this year, as reported by the site Layoffs.fyi. Big tech companies such as Alphabet, Amazon and Unity have all declared job reductions, with the most taking place in January.

The sector continues to struggle with changes following the pandemic, during which there was a surge in the recruitment of tech personnel.

The possible excess recruitment led to a challenging 2023, as corporations such as Amazon and Meta laid off tens of thousands of their staff.
