During a brief seven-minute meeting, IBM disclosed the dismissal of employees from two departments. IBM's head of communication, Jonathan Adashek, declared a significant reduction in the workforce in the marketing and communication sectors, just months after its CEO, Arvind Krishna, spoke about enhancing skills in an AI-oriented business setting.

IBM has become part of the technology sector's redundancy trend again this year, revealing that it is reducing staff from its marketing and communications departments, though the specific number has not been disclosed.

Jonathan Adashek, IBM's head of communications, confirmed the reduction during a roughly seven-minute meeting with the relevant departments, according to sources referenced in a CNBC report.

Just a few months ago, Arvind Krishna, the CEO of IBM, revealed in December that the corporation would prioritize "upskilling" its workforce in a business landscape powered by artificial intelligence. This announcement has just been made.

IBM has often been perceived as lagging behind since its rivals – Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, have amplified their attempts to vie in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI).

IBM revealed in August that they were substituting close to 8,000 positions with artificial intelligence, and subsequently introduced a 'development studio' called Watson X, aimed at "educating, adjusting and implementing" machine-learning models.

During the profit report in January 2023, IBM declared a reduction of 3,900 jobs, with its Chief Executive Officer subsequently announcing a halt in recruitment, suggesting, "It's conceivable that 30 per cent of that workforce could be superseded by AI and automation in the next five years."

The firm's CFO, James Kavanaugh, stated that they will keep on recruiting for specific roles and he anticipates that the total number of employees will remain roughly unchanged by the end of this year.

According to a study, by the close of 2023, IBM had approximately 288,000 staff members.

The narrative of technology downsizing persists.

Approximately 204 technology firms have laid off close to 50,000 employees during this year, as reported by the website Layoffs.fyi. Prominent tech corporations such as Alphabet, Amazon, and Unity have all declared layoffs, with January seeing the most job cuts.

The sector continues to struggle with changes following the pandemic, a period that saw a surge in technology recruitment.

The possibility of excessive recruitment led to a challenging 2023, as corporations such as Amazon and Meta dismissed tens of thousands of their staff.
