TikTok's issues in the US intensify, with the FTC set to possibly file a lawsuit for improper management of kids' data protection and security
TikTok's problems in the US could escalate due to a lengthy inquiry into their data management practices reaching its conclusion. The US FTC may either file a lawsuit or levy hefty penalties on TikTok and ByteDance for improperly handling children's data protection and security.
TikTok and ByteDance are finding it tough to get a breather in the US. Amidst a continuing struggle with proposed laws that might result in its prohibition in the United States, TikTok is now under the impending danger of facing action from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
Politico has revealed that the FTC is close to wrapping up an extensive probe into the well-known social media platform, which could result in a significant lawsuit or hefty penalties.
The main focus of the inquiry is reportedly on TikTok's privacy and security measures, especially how it manages the data of its underage users.
Politico reports that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is closely examining possible violations of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The scrutiny also includes accusations that the company misled people by inaccurately claiming that Chinese users couldn't access data from US-based individuals.
Moreover, TikTok might be subjected to sanctions if it breaches the conditions stated in its 2019 agreement with authorities concerning data protection.
The results of the FTC's probe remain unclear, but the escalating regulatory scrutiny presents substantial obstacles for TikTok as it strives to maintain its stronghold in its biggest market. Importantly, a bill that would force TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to either sell the app or face a complete ban in the US, is currently under consideration in the Senate, following a quick endorsement in the House.
The Biden Administration has expressed its backing for this initiative, mirroring attempts to pressure ByteDance to give up its control over TikTok. In addition, US intelligence authorities have informed legislators about alleged national security risks linked to the app, which further complicates the situation for TikTok.
