Erdogan’s First Visit to the US under Biden: A Pivotal Meeting Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict and Strained Bilateral Relations

During the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, President of Turkey, Tayyip Erdogan, is scheduled to visit the US on May 9, marking his first visit during Biden's administration. Reports from Turkish news outlets suggest that Erdogan is expected to repeat his call for Israel to halt its attacks in Gaza and advocate for a two-state resolution to the issue.

For the first time during the end of Biden's term, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan is set to visit the United States on May 9, as stated by a Turkish security representative on Friday.

The chief of Turkey's MIT intelligence agency, Ibrahim Kalin, is scheduled to have a meeting with members of the US House of Representatives this Friday. The meeting is set to discuss Erdogan's upcoming visit and other mutual issues, added the official, as reported by Reuters.

Previously, it was broadly covered by Turkish news sources that Erdogan was set to visit the US upon an invitation from President Joe Biden. The most recent face-to-face encounter between these two national leaders occurred last July during a NATO Summit, despite their regular telephonic communication.

By chance, the relationship between the US and Turkey had been strained due to Sweden's attempt to join NATO, which was originally vetoed by Istanbul. However, things have returned to usual after Turkey gave its approval. Additionally, the meeting takes on added importance given the recent war between Israel and Hamas, and the potential escalation of conflict throughout the whole of Western Asia.

Reports from Turkish media suggested that Erdogan would again insist on Israel halting its assaults in Gaza, in addition to supporting a two-state resolution to the conflict.

Erdogan, on the other hand, has expressed disapproval of the US for its consistent backing of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. Earlier this year in February, the Turkish leader criticized the US, blaming it for the thus far unsuccessful peace negotiations in the area ever since the war ignited following an assault on Israel by Hamas on October 7 the previous year.

A significant topic that is anticipated to capture the focus of both leaders could be the transaction involving F-16s to Turkey along with an enhancement and update procedure for the jets they've procured thus far.
