TikTok's issues in the US intensify, with the FTC expected to take legal action due to their poor management of children's data privacy and security

TikTok's problems in the US could escalate as a lengthy inquiry into their data management processes nears its conclusion. The US FTC is expected to either sue or impose hefty penalties on TikTok and ByteDance for their improper handling of children's data privacy and security.

TikTok and ByteDance appear to be continually facing challenges in the US. Amid a current fight against potential new laws that could result in a ban in the US, TikTok is now also under the potential risk of intervention from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Politico has reported that the FTC is close to wrapping up a long probe into the well-known social media platform, which could potentially result in a significant lawsuit or hefty penalties.

The primary focus of the inquiry is said to be on TikTok's privacy and security measures, especially how it manages the personal data of its young users.

Politico reports that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is closely examining possible violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The company is also facing accusations of misleading their policies by wrongly claiming that people in China had no access to the data of US users.

Furthermore, TikTok might be subjected to fines if it breaches the conditions set out in its 2019 agreement with regulatory bodies concerning data protection.

As the FTC's inquiry continues, the results remain unclear. However, the escalating regulatory scrutiny presents considerable difficulties for TikTok as it strives to maintain its position in its biggest market. Importantly, after a quick approval in the House, the Senate is discussing a law that would force ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, to either sell off the app or face a complete ban in the US.

The Biden Administration has endorsed this initiative, mirroring attempts to force ByteDance to give up control over TikTok. Moreover, US intelligence authorities have informed legislators about the alleged national security risks linked with the app, contributing to the complications of TikTok's situation.
